Is it possible? use a Dothan 770 in a T40! (instead of 765)

#1 Post by coconutie » Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:50 am

Hello, I have a T40; I understand by reading the posts that the dothan 765 would be the fastest CPU ugrade... but I have an opportunity to obtain a Dothan 770.. the difference being the FSB! understanding all this.. will the 855 chipset recognize the Dothan 770? bottom line will it work???

(reading the specs on Intel site... it seems to me that the M770 should work with either chipset 855 or the 915) does anybody know the answer to this?

I have no idea, but the first thing I would check is whether the 2 CPUs are pin-compatible (that is, do they have the same number of pins in the socket that they go into). Actually I'm quite curious about the answer to this as well, since I've pretty much replaced *everything* else in my TP (search for my other thread in this forum to see), and the CPU is the only part that I haven't upgrade... which I'm looking to do as the absolute, final thing to eke a bit more speed from my aging (and yet reliable and faithful) laptop.

Coconitie, don't even try it, because it will either not work, or it will work at FSB 400, in which case you'll end up with the processor running at 1.6Ghz.... (because it is a 16x multiplier part)...
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

i855 will not work with 533FSB parts. I asked an Intel employee directly about that, and he said no.

I believe you'll find your answer here:
