For T43 owner which upgrade their HD with aftermarket HITACHI/HGST:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the link above MESSAR wrote:

Warrning: Updating failure may cause unrecoverble damage to your harddisk and it may not work! This guide is only for power users.

Part A: Guide for updating retail harddisks except Hitachi 5K100/7K100 series

Step 1. Download the iso image from the following link
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62282

Step 2. Burn the image file into a CD-R or CD-RW disc

Step 3. Check the FW.PRO file in the disc, take a 60GB harddisk of 5K80 series for example here:

; Hitachi : HTS5480xxM9AT00
;
; HTS548060M9AT00 60.0GB
"HTS548060M9AT00","MGBOA50A","MGBOA5HA","MGBIA5HA.bin","hfui12L.exe","IA5HA","/u MRLA5HA.tbl"
"HTS548060M9AT00","MGBOA55A","MGBOA5HA","MGBIA5HA.bin","hfui12L.exe","IA5HA","/u MRLA5HA.tbl"
"HTS548060M9AT00","MGBOA5BA","MGBOA5HA","MGBIA5HA.bin","hfui12L.exe","IA5HA","/u MRLA5HA.tbl"
"HTS548060M9AT00","MGBOA5DA","MGBOA5HA","MGBIA5HA.bin","hfui12L.exe","IA5HA","/u MRLA5HA.tbl"

We can see that the phrases include 4 parts of information for automated flashing work:

MGBIA5HA.bin: New firmware file
hfui12L.exe: Flash program for specified harddisk
IA5HA: Version control phrase
MRLA5HA.tbl: CHECKSUM file

Find the phrases whitch matchs your harddisk and write down the 4 parts for following work.

Step 4. Boot with the disc, press "F5" key after seeing the boot messege to skip the autoexec program

Step 5. Type in the command in the following format:

[Flash program] [Version control phrase, first char. change to O] [New firmware file] /F [CHECKSUM file]

Take a 60GB harddisk of 5K80 series for example, the command should be:

hfui12L.exe OA5HA MGBIA5HA.bin /F MRLA5HA.tbl

Excute the command and press "U" in the program, you will see the failure information. That's doesn't matter, let's exit the program and continue to the next step.

Step 6. Type in the command in the following format:

[Flash program] [Version control phrase] [New firmware file] /F [CHECKSUM file]

Take a 60GB harddisk of 5K80 series for example, the command should be:

hfui12L.exe IA5HA MGBIA5HA.bin /F MRLA5HA.tbl

Excute the command and press "U" in the program, you will see the PASS information.

Congratulations! Your harddisk has been updated to IBM official firmware

Part B: Guide for updating retail Hitachi 5K100s and 7K100s

Step 1. Download the 1.44M floppy image I provided, for I can not post with attachment here, the file is uploaded to rapidshare, please download from the following link:
http://rapidshare.de/files/13537522/5K7K100.rar.html

Step 2. Write the image file into a floppy disk or a flash stick. It's also ok for choosing the software boot solution (vfloppy or some others), but you need another tool to extract the FW.PRO file from the image.

Step 3. Check the FW.PRO file in the disk, take a 80GB harddisk of 5K100 series for example here:

; Hitachi : HTS5410xxG9AT00
;
; HTS541080G9AT00 80.0GB
"HTS541080G9AT00","MB4IA5BJ","MB4IA60A","MB4IA60A.bdr","hfui14.exe","IA60A","/u mpbA60Ab.tbl"
"HTS541080G9AT00","MBYIA5BJ","MBYIA60A","MBYIA60A.bdr","hfui14.exe","IA60A","/u mpbA60Ab.tbl"

We can see that the phrases include 4 parts of information for automated flashing work:

MBYIA60A.bdr: New firmware file
hfui14.exe: Flash program for specified harddisk
IA60A: Version control phrase
mpbA60Ab.tbl: CHECKSUM file

Find the phrases whitch matchs your harddisk and write down the 4 parts for following work.

Step 4. Boot with the disk

Step 5. Type in the command in the following format:

[Flash program] [Version control phrase, first char. change to O] [New firmware file] /F [CHECKSUM file]

Take a 80GB harddisk of 5K100 series for example, the command should be:

hfui14.exe OA60A MBYIA60A.bdr /F mpbA60Ab.tbl

Excute the command and press "U" in the program, you will see the failure information. That's doesn't matter, let's exit the program and continue to the next step.

Step 6. Type in the command in the following format:

[Flash program] [Version control phrase] [New firmware file] /F [CHECKSUM file]

Take a 80GB harddisk of 5K100 series for example, the command should be:

hfui14.exe IA60A MBYIA60A.bdr /F mpbA60Ab.tbl

Excute the command and press "U" in the program, you will see the PASS information.

Congratulations! Your harddisk has been updated to IBM official firmware

Note for 5K100 100G user: The FW.PRO file doesn't contain a seprate part for 5K100 100G harddisk. Check the firmware version of your harddisk with AIDA32 or Everest before any work, if the firmware version is started with "MBYO", I think the following line should be the suite one for your 5K100 100G harddisk.

"HTS541080G9AT00","MBYIA5BJ","MBYIA60A","MBYIA60A.bdr","hfui14.exe","IA60A","/u mpbA60Ab.tbl"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have 7K100 Hitachi with FIRMWARE MCZOA40M

command line FOR 7K100 100GB 7200rpm HITACHI :

A>hfui15.exe OA51A MCZIA51A.BDR /F MPCA51AB.TBL

press U in the program, see failure after trying to update. But it doesn't matter. Exit the program then type following:

A>hfui15.exe IA51A MCZIA51A.BDR /F MPCA51AB.TBL

Press U again in the program, you should see Pass..Exit and Reboot..
Ya Da..

NO MORE 2010 ERROR MESSAGE AFTER ALL..

THANKS MESSAR.. 8)

It's only the firmware.
Retail is when you buy aftermarket;
OEM when you buy directly from IBM(or as IBM's part)...

Did you loose any data on your hard drive? I cannot afford to be done until I finish one of my main projects (looking to be this Wednesday or Thursday). I will likely put off the update until then and report back.

We established a few months ago that at least some retail devices seem to not be flashable... confirmed by manufacturer.

No. Everything remains the same except the HD firmware only. Similar when you upgrade your bios.

IMO, all HGST should be flashable.
I updated my 7K100 last night and everything works just fine.

I will try to flash my Hitachi 60GB 7200rpm tomorrow night and see what happen.. :?:

Here's what's known about Hitachi drives:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 863#101863

I did a little research after that post, and did find some other info leading to the same conclusion.

So we've got two different stories floating around here.

Topic Edit: Floppy image revised for reported error

As a electronic designer, I think a harddisk manufactured in recent years can not embed with a PROM chip.

All the problems you meet with the fw.exe should be the limitation of the program, but not the hardware. The fw.exe is just a shell, all the flash operation will be done in the background. Maybe the flash utility refuse to work but the shell reports ok, and you can not see the error message.

Ok, this begs the question:

Why is one from IBM, and another hosted on rapidshare? What's the source of the 5k100/7k100 firmware?

The source is same to others, but when you boot from a disc, the following command can not be applied

copy MB4IA60A.BDF MB4OA60A.BDF

copy MC4IA51A.BDF MC4OA51A.BDF

MB4OA60A.BDF or MC4OA51A.BDF are required for first failure update, or we can not continue to next step

My firmware starts with MBZ0A60A, am I out of luck. Don't the new T60's come with 5k100's? If so, will I be able to use that firmware?

Thanks Messar for you work, I don't care where the firmware comes from as long as it fixes the problem. 2010 is so very annoying.

Fujitsu 39T2641 R 1
HGST 39T2705 R 1
Toshiba 39T2713 R 1

SATA hard disk drive, 100 GB, 9.5 mm, 5,400 rpm

From the service parts list, the T60s do come with 5K100 100G, but the interface has been changed to SATA :(

Just wait for the next firmware update release, wish the new interface do not come with a saperate firmware version :(

Why are the 5k100 100GB models missing? Such as the HTS721010G9AT00 (7200) or HTS541010G9AT00 (5400).

Is there a limitation preventing drives > 80GB?

but I've heard not all are compatible. There appears to be a firmware update out... but I'm curious why this thread doesn't include updating that drive as well (it oddly stops at the 80GB model).

NTRawrite. It works fine with my XP Pro SP2. I was able to extract the files to my USB floppy drive on my T43. If I were using DOS, I'd use Rawrite3. Linux could use 'dd' or I believe there is a build or RAWrite for it. The Linux guys would know for sure. 8)

I used WinRar to unpack the RAR archive. I have a licensed copy of WinZip. Looks like I'll need to buy WinRar too. It seems much better than WinZip. Only $30 too.

RAWrite and similar tools
