"Software Installer" killed my friend's X41...

..."Killed," of course, is an exaggeration. But what it did do is pretty bad.

To make it worse, this is my friend's machine, and I broke everything while trying to help her.

First problem is pretty minor. Instead of being able to choose a profile from the logon screen (you know, where your name sits next to a picture of a duck, or a guitar, or a skateboard), the system mandates a Ctrl-Alt-Del, and manual entry of the username. When I try to change it (using XP), XP says that I can't, because vrlogon.dll won't let me.

Second, Software Installer put the lastest Access Connections on the machine. This spawns two tray icons (the icons that show the three bars), so I decided to roll back Access Connections. This killed wireless entirely. The system claims that it cannot find any signals, despite the presence of dozens. I have rolled back and forward the WiFi drivers and Access Connections, and for some reason, the computer refuses to see any Wifi signals at all.

Please advise.

The first problem is pretty easy to fix. I got bit by this one too and found the solution on Lenovo's site. The logon screen was changed by the Fingerprint Software, so if you want to change it back, start the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software program. On it's main screen, choose "Settings" then "System Settings". On the "Logon" tab, uncheck "Enable Logon Support". (You can also uncheck "Start Control Center on Windows Startup" on the "General" Tab if you don't want to continually be reminded to register your fingerprint.)

You'll have to re-start the machine for the settings to take effect. Then the simple graphic login screen should return.

I'll let someone else jump in to help with your second problem. In my biased opinion, I'd uninstall Access Connections and go with the native Windows Wireless Zero, but that's a personal choice.

Hi, im not sure if this will help but try to uninstall the current version of access connection in your machine and install the latest access connections manually not through software installer and see if you were able to gain wifi signal.

First, un-install AC manually, then, without rebooting, installing either 3.81 or 4.11a then reboot. If you are still have problems, then it could be that the driver is having install issues. In that case, uninstall AC and the driver, reboot, install AC (whichever version you would like), then reboot. After the final reboot, everything should work fine. HTH
