wireless help needed....Poooleezzzze

#1 Post by pschoggens » Tue Feb 21, 2006 1:43 am

Hi,

Have never been wireless before other than the entertainment of watching my step daughter spend 3 days setting up a wireless router on my cable modem. :P When she left...she took it with her.

Now a year later...I won an ebay bid for " NEW LENOVO IBM Z60T THINKPAD CM 360 1.4ghz256mb 40gb hd " for under a grand. :D It has a built in antenna and will pick up 802.11a,b,g. signals.

I did some shopping for a wireless router, but i am confused  as to what I should get. I do not play online games, but may want to watch online video in the future. At some point I will upgrade the RAM when the price comes down.

Anybody get a good wireless router for a killer deal and would like to shair the modle number? I was told linksys was a good brand ...but still do not know what I should actually buy.

Look forward to your response!

It honestly does not make a lot of difference.

Go to BestBuy (or wherever you shop) and find an inexpensive one you like. You have a return policy, so you can return it if you can't get it working.

I'd suggest a Linksys G series router; should cost around $80.
You will probably not get anything with the 802.11A support, but that should not bother you too much.

Installation should be plug and play.
Install it without WEP encryption first, just to make sure you have everything working.
After, turn on encryption; WPA is better than WEP.

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

Linksys is a pretty good brand to start off with, although some of the models can get really expensive from what I have seen in the retail outlets. My primary wireless router is a Motorola WR850G (supports B and G) and I got it for around $10; really good router it is too, it has its own control panel through its default IP and that allows me to set up various things. I also haven't had one disconnect from it that was a "dropped connection."

I have the D-Link DI-524 and I've never had one problem with it. it connects perfectly to Powerbooks, IBM 11a/b/g cards (atheros), Intel 2200 & 2915 cards, etc.

I paid $12 after rebates so I am very satisfied.

I'm paying $9 (plus taxes and shipping):

I don't usually like D-Link routers, but this deal was too good to be true. I used to have a nice Buffalo G, but VPN passthrough just refuses to work. D-Links work fine if you simply need basic wifi. Just make sure -- with any router -- that you password protect both the connection and the router login menu (the interface you access to set your wifi connection password, a.k.a. WEP or WPA).
