Which HDD 7K100 for A31p?

#1 Post by Seweryn » Tue Feb 21, 2006 5:38 am

Hello,

I am going to get new HDD for my A31p and I will probably looking for the 7K100 as advised on the forum.
Could anyone let me know which model/version of the 7K100 is the best to go for? I found a few versions of 7K100 and I am just not sure which is more suitable.
And by the way how to get on the new HDD all the IBM drivers and programs (IBM record Now, ThinkPad manager etc.). I do not have any CDs.

Regards,
Seweryn

The E- models (e.g., E7k100) are models designed for blade servers, designed to run 24/7 without power saving features. You want just the standard 7k100, which will have power saving features.

You will want to ATA (ATA-6 ??) or PATA version. Not the SATA (Serial ATA). SATA is for the newest laptops (think X60, T60, Z60, etc).

the 100GB 7k100 has a higher platter density than the plebian 80Gb or 60GB. So all things being equal, the 100GB will be slightly faster than even the smallers drives in the 7k100 family (let alone the former 7k60 model).

So go for the 100GB 7k100 ATA-6, if you can swing the cost. Otherwise the 80GB or 60GB is fine if you can't spare the extra $$$.

Thank you for so detailed reply.
What is the difference between ATA and ATA-6?
Does all the 7k100 have 8MB buffer?

So far i really am loving my new 7K100 hard drive. I had read some issues about the drive being noisy and causing vibrations but im surprised how quiet it really is. You can barely hear the drive spinning and absolutely no vibrations. I had the 4200RPM before so you can imagine how fast windows loads up.

Thanks for replys guys.
I found one 7k100 but it has ATA-100 Controller (not the ATA-6). Would this one be OK for A31p? And what is the difference ATA-6 vs ATA-100?
Thank again.

IBM says same thing. I don't know much beyond that. My friend ordered a new drive and asked them the difference. I guess as far as the laptop was concerned there wasn't any difference.
