I have just bought a z60m, but the sound on my speakers is not even audible at 2 metres range? i have kept the system audio high, as well as the speakers volume is maximum ( changed with the volume buttons). Apparantly, the soundmax software that gets installed, doesnt provide any interface to me. (is it okay?, by that i mean. i should be able to set properties of my audio device using that right?). i have a dual boot... and the speaker volume is amazingly large in linux, but im not able to find the reason for the low volume level in windows??? i have re-installed the audio software from ibm-suppurt site as well... can somebody help me outta this???

You should have a volume control icon in the System Tray on the lower right side of the display. Also the volume control can be found in Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control. The SoundMAX control (which doesn't really control the volume [at least on my T42]) is located in Start > Control Panel > SoundMAX. Additionally you have the hardware volume control buttons on the keyboard which do not change the software volume control settings. Finally, you can set the CD/DVD drive to use digital audio or analog audio. This is set in Start > Contol Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.

Already done that
first of all, thanks for reply.
but i have already done all that....
stil lthe volume level is pretty low... compared to what i get in Linux!! I cant understand the reason.... And yer, the soundmax doesnt show any configuration option as well!! But i dont think... it would have been helpful anyways... coz it doesnt have any volume configuration in it!!! I am done with system volume config, as well as the speaker volume buttons already... i cant still find the reason why the volume level is low!!! please suggest....

Try running DirectX diagnostics. Go to Start > Run and type "dxdiag" in the dialog box without quotes, and hit the enter key.
If no help there, try System File Checker. Go to Start > Run and type "SFC /scannow" in the dialog box without quotes, and hit the enter key.
Try running a registry cleaner program.
If still no luck, I believe you can uninstall Volume Control in Add or Remove Programs (see choice on the left to Add or Remove Windows Components), reboot, then reinstall Volume Control.
Finally, you could try uninstalling any software that might control the volume. Maybe some piece of software has locked the volume to a low state. This may just be a registry setting that needs changing.
I do not have a Z60m, so I don't know how loud they are supposed to get. But if you have louder sound with Linux, that would seem to indicate it should get just as loud in Windows. Have you tried different programs to see if the low volume affects all of them; i.e.: Windows Media Player, WinDVD, Winamp, Quicktime, etc.?
