ThinkPad T40 (2373-72g) USB 2.0 Problem.

#1 Post by frenchd » Tue Feb 21, 2006 11:26 am

Hi to all.
I have a ThinkPad T40 , model 2373-72G and have a problem that Windows XP SP2 thinks the USB ports are all USB1.0. Any ideas how to correct this?
I've downloaded a new BIOS, and installed the CHIPSET drivers from IBM support, but still no good. I've removed them from device manager and rebooted, let windows re-install - still no good.
HELP
Thanks

try downloading the chipset drivers direct from Intel.

While it might be a software or Windows problem, I believe I've read where this is often a motherboard problem. Do a search on this forum for "USB 1.0 T40" without quotes and click radio button to "Search for all terms".

I just had my T40 in for service and now the 2.0 doesnt work. It may be from something else or it could be a bad board as they replaced that. I cannot find that intel driver on their website. Frenchd, what did you find your problem to be?

My T40 (2373-8CM) started to drop USB2 devices back to USB1 and telling me I should use the available USB2 ports. (of course there are only 2 ports and they are USB2). I tried all the driver and bios updates, no joy there.

Finally rang IBM service and they tried to say it was drivers etc, and denied any issues with hardware. After a little crankiness on my part they said they would pick it up for service.

To my delight they replicated the problem once they had my T40. Fix was a new main board, changed under warranty. I now have my T40 back good as new! :D

My advice is push the issue for service, as there seems to be a USB issue with some T40's that only a new main board can fix.

Hope this is of some help.

Hey thanks for the reply.
Since posting the topic, I've managed to get IBM to install a new system board - however since they did that the USB ports will not recognise ANY external USB hard disk (or mass storage) devices - it now just says "unknown device" in the system tray. I've gone back to IBM and they are 'looking into it'. Perhaps the engineer who visited had a duff system board? lets hope so.
