Dead Pixel Dance or the like

I have had my T40 since July of 03 with zero problems, until recently.
My LCD developed these annoying little white spots scattered throughout the screen. I have zero dead pixels but these spots were annoying so I took it to my local service center and they said this is not normal and are replacing the screen. So I and hopefully many others will join me in the NO DEAD PIXELS DANCE or the like.

I know it's very childish but hey it just might work LOL
I really hope this new screen does not have any. I debated whether to even have them switch it because of this. But they insited that those spots will get worse.
Anyway I will know soon it's there now and they said it will be done in a couple of hours.

Just go back from picking it up. They were dang fast
Dropped it off about 10:45am and they called about 12:15pm with it finished.
NO DEAD OR STUCK PIXELS and NO White Spots YEAH!!!!!
I think this screen is even a little bit better than the the original as far as color and Brightness.
And AFAIK it's an ID Tech

That is quick, I'm getting my T42 tomorrow after waiting 3 weeks. (Sent my first one back due to dead pix.)

I dont understand the big deal and dead pixels i got two dead pixels and i dont give a $hit, you have to really focus to notice them! Seriously, PICKY PICKY PICKY people you guys are

Yeah, pixels aren't that bad but white spots are. Mine is has a 1in diameter. Sucks.

[censored] right Iam picky when it comes to Pixels but if they don't bother you then more power to ya. But 1 dead pixel to me is too many.
Bugs me a whole lot more than a wiggly battery.

Don't really know.
I should've asked them what causes it. They didn't say except that they weren't normal.
I think it is strange that they were right on the spot to change the LCD becasue of them though. There were only like 4 maybe 5mm spots. I just took it in to have them looked at and they said well IBM will want to change that. So I did. They did say that they would probably get worse.
Its just funny they chage it for 4 or 1 of these spots but 8 or 15 are needed for dead/stuck pixel.

My dead pixel was in the center of the screen and bugged the hell out of me. I figure if I'm paying over two grand for a laptop, I should be happy with it all the way around, otherwise I'd get a Dell... dude.

white spots and hundreds of tiny white specs..
i have seen all of these at least once..

its a warranty item..

personally, i don't care for stuck on pixels but a dead pixel or two are not a problem to me..

if you have 5, maybe even 4 stuck on pexels all adjacent that look like a scratch the display will be replaced..
5 or so single pixels scattered about will not generate a new display under warranty..

it is a bit subjective..

Hey Bill!

You're up kinda late. I'm not sure if mine was a dead pixel or a stuck pixel, it was white all of the time. If it were along the edge or corner it wouldn't have bothered me as much.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to my new one, I'll keep you posted and thanks again for all of your help!

white all the time is a stuck on pixel..

can be very annoying..

you said dead pixel..

not nearly as annoying..

How do you guys know if it's a dead pixel versus dust on the "inside" of the LCD?

Mine seems to be a light gray color that doesn't change when I put on different backgrounds. I know what I stuck pixels is, since that's always a certain color. So, when I have it on a black background, I can still see the fleck of dust. That's why I think it's dust rather than a dead pixel which is supposed to be black.

My current Thinkpad is perfect except for that "dust particle." Anyone able to blow some compressed air to get rid of it? It's about 2cm above the bottom at midline.

sounds like either one of those white specs of unknown origin or a stuck on pixel..

not sure if you CAN blow some air between the TFT and backlight..

take a magnifier and take a CLOSE look..
or even a jewelers loup..

I occasionally have white spots too.. they usually dissapear after a reboot.

on my dads old laptop (new enough to have TFT though), some little bugs got under the LCD - very, very annoying. So it's perfectly possible, don't know if it applies to thinkpads too.

this can be a software issue or it could be bad memory..
or cheap memory..

i had a cadillac that was built on a monday..
it was a new 1971 eldorado..
huge car..!
terrible build quality..

however, that was michael moore working on my cadillac..

in china, they don't get drunk on what passes for a "weekend" there.. thus no monday QC problems..
