Z60m WSXGA+ Screen distortion/backlight leakage
Figured I should let you guys know, as I also posted this on another board. Starting 2 days ago, my basically perfect LCD started to have white halo marks near the bottom left side of my lcd. showing up out of the blue was pretty odd, considering it was only a week old, and gets carried aorund in a laptop case inside a bookbag strapped to my back.
One idea I am leaning towards is the hinges being slightly off, or something along those lines. If you slightly twist the lcd with your hands, the spots that distort on the screen are the exact spots that the light is showing up at.
So right now I am pretty angry and sad, considering I spent 2 months waiting to get this thing, and now this. I loved the machine overall.
Now the problem was picking a replacement. To get an exact replacement since mine was custom user setup, was going through the whole crap-shoot again. I didn't want to wait 2 months for a replacement. So I ordered a T60 express model, and since it shares the same keyboard, battery, construction I should be pretty happy with it. Only downside is the loss of screen size (200 horizontal pixels) by going with a 4:3 over a 16:9 screen.

I'm sorry for your problemsown6volvos wrote:One idea I am leaning towards is the hinges being slightly off, or something along those lines. If you slightly twist the lcd with your hands, the spots that distort on the screen are the exact spots that the light is showing up at.
I don't even consider that a downside. I still prefer 4:3, although 16:10 is quite OK with the task bar moved to the side. I only went with the Z series because comparably equipped T's were far more expensive. Nevertheless, it's a very nice machineown6volvos wrote:Only downside is the loss of screen size (200 horizontal pixels) by going with a 4:3 over a 16:9 screen.

Why not just ship it in to be repaired?
IBM's warranty service has been very good to me..

I'm having a similar problem with my 5 week old Z60m -- halo suddenly coming up in one corner. You say that the hinges on yours might be slightly off. When I close mine the screen becomes slightly warped where it meets the base. Even though mine has the titanium cover I can depress it (straighten it basically) at that point. I noticed this early on but didn't give it much thought. Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

I have not had this issue with either of the displays on my Z60m or T60.
However it's important to note that I did have the exact same problem you are describing on my T43 (halo effect).
I called tech support, they sent a box out for me to return it in, shipping prepaid by them, and they replaced the display and returned in in less than 72 hours. Wow! Came back clean as new.
Just like any mass produced product, they use suppliers that from time to time may let something slip through quality control.
That's why I'm so loyal to the ThinkPad product... they stand behind it, period. And as you know you can take advantage of the 30 day return, it's win - win either way.
