So I was just searching the web a month ago, and my ac power turned off on my t42. I checked the wall plug, yadda yadda, and finally nailed it down to my ac power plug in the back of my laptop.

I call IBM and find out my laptop is 15 days out of warranty (only got a 1 year warranty for some reason...). Whatever, I need this plug so I send it in, get it back a couple days later good as new...but they've charged be $1200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now the tech repairman on the phone gave me a soft quote of 420 (which i thought was too much), but 1200??? anyone else think that is outrageous?

That sounds like a mistake to me, I find it pretty strange for them to charge that much for the AC power plug in the back of the Thinkpad; $20 sounded more reasonable though.

Have you called them about it?

A couple of years ago I wanted a CMOS backup battery for a model 600E ThinkPad. I went on IBM's website, and the price listed was about $420.00 as I recall.

I sent IBM an e-mail saying there must be some error, as this is just a common coin cell with a short pair of wires and a plug. They responded that they would fix the price. I checked later, and the price was $15.00. I waited a few weeks to make the order, as I wanted to add a couple of items and I only wanted to pay one shipping charge (at the time $15.00 minimum). When I was ready to place the order, the price was again $420.00.

I e-mailed IBM again, but this time I was told the price was correct, and it was based upon availability of the part. When availability became low, the price was adjusted accordingly. I guess there was no problem about IBM ever running out of a part

Needless to say, I bought the CMOS backup battery elsewhere.

i can get a brand new t42 with 3 years warranty with this price

alright, i finally got the invoice...
I was charged $187 for "Minimum Charge Applies"
and $408 for "Parts-electr.rpr #00T4444"

I got my motherboards FVU (93P4158), but I can't get any price on it. I believe they just had to replace the motherboard to get the AC plug to work. Anyone know if it would cost ~$408 or maybe even why the 'minimum charged applied' to me?

Thanks again for all your help..i've been lurking around this site for a little over a year now getting solutions to all my thinkpad problems.

My guess is that they told you it would cost $1,200, so that when you received the actual bill of $595, you would be "Relieved", and not angry.
