alright, now for HELP!

#1 Post by nikemen » Mon Feb 27, 2006 1:56 pm

So, after all the years of posting, reading, learning, educating etc, now I come back to the fold with a soldiers cry for HELP!

Relatively new T43 with a blut screen one day. A FRIEND says that he thinks he hit the HD with his head, not dropping the computer mind you, but HIT HIS HEAD on the keyboard pad.

Then, the BSOD.

Now, I cannot boot the drive, it makes some GRINDING sounds, I was able to do the ACCESS IBM startup, and get to a diagnostic screen, but it failed at some sectors and just stayed that way for 30 minutes. I shut down.

Second attempt at reboot, it was doing thins SO slowly, and throwing up Terminal DOS commands, and execute CMD.exe, etc.

Then more grinding sounds.

I was NOT able to get into R&R, not that I think there was a recent image (man, WHY do we turn this stuff off?)

I'll call IBM and get a replacement drive sent out, but really need some of the data on this drive.

Any thoughts for utilities, will the install CD's from my T42 offer and support?

Woud you try mounting it in an external enclosure to get data off it, or send it somewhere.

Any direction or help would be HELPFULL!

thanks in advance,
TB

I would try the external enclosure and try to access it on another system. If it still doesn't work, try removing the drive and lightly tapping (NOT SLAPPING) the drive against the palm of your hand.

Data recovery on a failing disk is long and difficult. You spend a lot of time betting on the fact that if you succesfully map or skip the bad sectors, then you hope your data is amongst the good one and you can access it by filesystem. Depending on the importance the data you may want to consider a specializing company for the job, on the other hand to try yourself doesn't cost much, so ...
T440s OK so far.
T420s NVIDIA graphics. Nice, then MB failure.
T400s Workhorse. two of'em, both faulty display with vertical stripes.
T43 °very nice° - MB reflown and dead, two of'em.
T42 15°, dead onboard wireless.
T40, dead memory slot, stolen from me
T30, stolen from me
TP600 dead

If it's a failed disk to to a strike, it's likely a hard crash (a true head crashed into the disk, rather than a software crash (Corruption).

The only real way to remedy that is by using a trusted company to extract the data on the drive:

T43 (2687-DUU) - 1.86GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 100GB 5400 (non IBM-firmware Hitachi 5k100) HD, Fingerprint Scanner, 802.11abg/Bluetooth, ATI x300

well, not good

well, trying to get it to mount was pretty much a no go. The drive sat there for 20 minutes sounding like nothing more than a cricket. click click click,

about 21 minutes into it, I tried the slap it with the palm. It started up, and started humming, but SCRAPING and rubbing and making horrible noises. I think the spindal may be broken, or the seak head it toast or lose.

I was able to get info in device / drive management, but I was NOT able to get it to mount or to read information.

Now, next question. It appears that this is indeed the fabled 60gb HITACHI drive that had so many problems in early release. I am almost certain it received the firmware upgrade, but not certain.

What will IBM do for me on this unit, for some reason now that I check the warrarnty on this unit is over, must have been a one year and not a three year.

Will IBM replace since it was such a problem unit? Or, should I just call in from a machine that still has the three year warranty on it?
