i've never upgraded before! help!

i've got an old 770x tp that i'm either going to sell or upgrade. actually, i was just going to sell it, but after reading this bbs my appetite has been whetted. i've read through some of the threads, and i think this is what i understand.

if i want to upgrade the cpu, i need to find something that is "mmc-2" and not intel mobile/speed step. is that right? if i get a processor larger than 500, it may not function at its maximum speed, but still should give me better performance. is this right? can someone suggest processors to me (remembering that i'm a computer ignoramous) that would work, and spec keywords so i'll be able to find them/distinguish them from ones that won't work?

my battery is likely dead, and i should throw it out. i only ask, because my model of tp doesn't have a battery led. just a charging indicator on top of the keyboard.

can i use pc-100 ram to upgrade the ram? or do i need to find pc-66?

Ok, well the STICKY Thread gives you an idea, but i'll make it specific.

You're Thinkpad 770X comes with a 300 mhz processor. You could easily find a 400 mhz processor to replace it, and it's a straight up exchange. If you have the latest bios.

While you're at it, replace the hidden memory module with a 128 meg, 100 mhz, 8 chip (i believe, someone will correct me if i'm wrong) module.

My Z currently has these upgrades done to it. I noticed the increase watching DVD's (no decoder) from 366 to 400mhz upgrade, i'm sure you'll notice it more.

The challenge is getting the laptop down to where you can replace these two components. I'd recommend having the HMM (hardware maintenance manual) either printed, or loaded on another computer while you perform "surgery" on your 770. The right tools are needed, but nothing too difficult to come by. (all were on my Swiss Army Knife - Cyber edition)

IF you wanna get a little more Risque! You'll find on eBay atleast a half a dozen MMC2 processors over 500 mhz. They will fit in and work, but you have to either live with a constant "127" error on boot up, or edit your BIOS to ignore the "127" error (actually it ignores the larger L2 cache which you then have to enable once in your Operating System.) Am I forgetting anything?

If it is dead it will read "0" and not increase.
