SP2 Slipstream with IBM Recovery disks?
SP2 Slipstream with IBM Recovery disks?
There are numerous articles on the web about creating Windows XP SP1 slipstreamed disks using original Win XP Cd's
I was wondering if it would be possible to create Slpstreamed versions of the IBM recovery dsks with SP2 when it is released?
This would be of interest to numerous people.

I did this once before, I think you simply copy all the folders from your xp cd to an area on your hardisk. Then you
take the folder i386 from the SP2 installation and simply replace the old one with the new SP2 files. Once that's all complete you burn the folder on to a CD. It should be bootable. I'm pretty sure this is the way to do this. I may try it, I'll let everybody know if it works.

-Download the service pack.
-Create a directory on your hd and extract the service pack files to this directory.
-Create another directory and dump the contents of the cd containing the i386 folder to this directory
-Navigate to the directy where the service pack was extracted and type - update -s
path-to-i386
-Save to a bootable CD/network/ibm part and your good to go.

What is the advantage of modifying the IBM recovery CDs over an image created with rapid restore?kkapoor wrote:. I often perform fresh installs on my T40 and it would be really useful to be able to create our own slipstreamed SP2 cd's when it is released.
It takes 20 min to restore a system with RR but over one hour if you use the CDs.

The contents of the CD are insignificant. All he needs to do is figure out which recovery CD contains the windows i386 folder and he should be good to go.He doesn't want to slipstream the SP into an installation directory. He wants the SP to be slipstreamed to the Recovery CDs of his ThinkPad.
Please post your results...

Thanks for the time saver stingray. I just stuck one of my recovery disks into my compaq and they are in fact image based. I guess the only option would be to use the recovery cd's on a clean hd and then apply the service pack to the load. After that you could reimage that drive with something like ghost.

here's a very detailed "How To" for slipstreaming SP2 into an Win'XP install !
www.tomshardware.com/howto/20040908/index.html
the catch?
a) you need a clear Win'XP install CD (ie: without the SP1)
b) "product recovery" CD's that come with notebook computers may not work.

This should be incorrect. (I can't say "is" because I haven't tested myself...) SP2 will apply over SP1 on a running system, and all the "update" command does is copy files over the old ones in i386, so SP2 should go on top of a CD that already has SP1 in it.w0qj wrote:here's a very detailed "How To" for slipstreaming SP2 into an Win'XP install !
