Is IBM giving me the run around

#1 Post by rosemarycane » Tue Feb 28, 2006 4:32 pm

I have been having a problem with my t43. Whenever it is on battery power, it will not go into hibernation. It will go into standby, but not hibernation.

After several calls to executive relations and talking to their tech support, the answer I was given is that it is a protective measure that the laptop does not go into hibernation while on battery power. They said this is stated somewhere on their website. It is because while you are carrying laptop it could cause damage to the harddrive if it went into hibernation.

Can anyone confirm or deny these accusations?

This does not sound right to me, but maybe I am wrong.

Thanks,

Sean

maybe the hard drive action of hibernating combined with movement would harm the computer? I'm not sure tho why they would be so worried about that...

Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me and is certainly not the way my T40 works (or my T23 or my 600X).

Do you mean it will not go into hibernation from standby after a specified time or you can't go into hibernation even with FN-F12?

The former is described in this document:

My guess is that they are trying to say that, whenever the HDAPS sense movement, it will ramp the heads off the platters to protect both of them and this might pause hibernation. What isn't right is the part about the T43 never suspending whilst on battery; My T43 suspends just fine on battery even when it has been moved around a bit, it also resumes fine too.
