Does normal Thinkpad charger works for T60

#1 Post by rpaturi » Wed Mar 01, 2006 11:10 am

I have about 5 of them connected to each outlet logically I use. I dont want to buy another 5 :) for T60.

Thanks for your help.

It depends on power requirements. If both laptops use the ubiquitous 72 watt power supply, you are probably fine. Just make sure the T60 does not draw more watts (as stated on its supplied adapter) than the 5 adapters you have. ... JD Hurst

IBM has sent my AC adapters for my T60 - they are 90W and have a diffrent connector than the T4X machines I've had. I don't have the actual T60 yet, though. :(

Are you talking abou thte connector, to the machine or connecter at the adapter it self ?

And can you please let me know output voltage and vattage.

(On normal thinkpads its 16V 4.5A & 130-199VA)

If the T60 has a 90 Watt adapter and a different plug, then, do NOT use the so-called "standard" 72 Watt adapter. Ohm's Law :)

I'm not an engineer, but the adapter says

Code: Select all

INPUT 100-240V~
    2.0A-1.0A 50-60Hz

OUTPUT 20V 4.5A
The plug into the laptop is different - there is a photo of the back of the T60 in the review linked to from the 'Awesome T60 Review' thread below. The plug from the wall into the adapter is rounded on both ends rather than only one - I don't have a T40 adapter here to check if this is different or the same.

I wonder why Lenovo jumped from 16.5v to 20v for the T60? :?

Because they needed 90W, and 16,5V is kind of low for that using the thin cable like the one that goes from the PS to the machine.
I leave the related calculation to majors in e.e, but in short using an higher voltage allows a small wire section for cable.
They changed the connector according to the voltage and are using now the standard EIAJ RC-5320A with female pin.

Ever heard a woman complaining thet she can't find high-power air-driers in the US? Because @110v, a powerful one like some sold in Europe would need a cord too tick, making it even more expensive and uneasy to handle.
T440s OK so far.
T420s NVIDIA graphics. Nice, then MB failure.
T400s Workhorse. two of'em, both faulty display with vertical stripes.
T43 °very nice° - MB reflown and dead, two of'em.
T42 15°, dead onboard wireless.
T40, dead memory slot, stolen from me
T30, stolen from me
TP600 dead

I was evaluating a Z series machine in January and asked about the new adapter and our Lenovo rep told me that the T60 would have the same one and eventually the entire ThinkPad line would change to the new type.
