Can i use artic silver on the Video chip?? 128MB FIRE GLT2

#1 Post by cmarti » Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:08 am

Hi!

I will replace the CPU on my T40 with a SL7V3 and will use artic silver 5,
can i use it on the video chip also?

Ill it keep it cooler? Do i have to remove the termal rubber?

While i am playing Battle front 1 the temperature raises too high and the computer freezes.

Thanks for the advise you can bring...

Hi,

Yes you could theoretically use it, but some things to consider :
1. I think it will void your warranty, and artic silver leaves a residue on the chip surface that you will not be able to hide.

2. If you leave the rubber pad on, it will probably make not too much effect, but if you remove it, you risk not doing good contact because of the gap that is left... be cuatious, you may have to bend a little bit the copper plate or place some other metallic filler for the gap.

3. In my opinion, your TP should NOT overheat that much. My T42 does not go over 67 C playing any 3D game with CPU AND GPU at 100% activity. And I don't have arctic silver on the GPU, just on the CPU. Try also undervolting the processor with NHC or similar. This gives very good results.

FTC,

I did as you said and it works! I did reduce the CPU voltage to 1.276 volts
And now i am able to play battle font 1 for hours.

Thanks for the good advice.

cmarti, glad it worked. Just out of curiosity.. did you just undervolt or did you ALSO apply arctic silver on the CPU ?
