Client Security - Password Manager

#1 Post by TimWang » Thu Mar 02, 2006 4:29 pm

I was wondering if there was anyway of preventing this program to run during startup? When it loads, it always prompts me to enter my passphrase and since I don't really need this program, I was wondering if I could prevent it from starting.

Yep, check into the CSS options and Advanced options, should be a tick box in there about "how to logon," whether it's the Windows mechanism, or CSS, or Googly-bear (joke).

(Don't have it on my T41, so I'm quoting from mem'ry.)

Well, entering the passphrase comes after the fingerprint reader. So, to login, I have to swipe my finger and then a few moments later, enter my passphrase. I'm not sure why I to do this twice.

I too posted this same question in a previous thread. Since then, I have found no satisfactory solution but to disable "cssauth.exe" from running at startup. It is this application which launches "pwmgr.exe" - the Password Manager utility.

There a couple of ways you can disable it as it relies on Window's "Run" registry command.
1. Delete the "cssauth" item from registry key HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Run (back it up first if you want)
2. Run the msconfig command and disable it in the "Startup" tab.

With the latter, you'll be running in selective startup mode. Just tick the checkbox on reboot so you don't get the prompt again until the next time you modify settings in msconfig. I've been running in selective mode for quite a few weeks now mainly to get rid of all the unwanted applications and services that IBM have added which I don't use. The result? Faster boot up times and reduced memory consumption. I plan to keep running in selective startup mode so just in case I wish to use those services/apps , it's just a matter of enabling a checkbox and rebooting.

Also, the "silent" parameter which is used to run the cssauth.exe suggests to me that it's meant to suppress the password manager application. I think it's a bug but I wasn't able to find a working link where I could report such a bug :(

I've also seen a couple of error messages which seem to indicate that this newest release isn't as stable or well tested as it is could be. I hope this isn't a sign of the quality of the Lenovo software department.

Do you think that the "Password Manager utility" has anything to do with the "Secured Drive" being loaded?

No the Password Manager utility does not load the Private Disk feature. This is loaded upon startup by "pdservice.exe" which is started also by the Windows registry Run command.

Is there a way to disable password manager from startup, but keep it so that i can login with the fingerprint reader?

I believe it's part of the Client Security Solution, or REscue & Recover and Client Security Solution. Check for those.

I know, IBM/Lenovo does not use consistent naming conventions for the apps in the Registry Uninstall area. IBM _this_ and ThinkPad _that_ and ThinkVantage _something_ as well as other names.

Thanks, I also wanted to get rid of Password Manager, and uninstalling "Rescue & Recovery and Client Security Solution" did the trick. Not surprisingly now I can't back up with R&R anymore. I wish they would make Password Manager separate.

Selective uninstall

#12 Post by mattster » Tue Mar 21, 2006 7:52 pm

You should be able to do a selective uninstall to remove the Password Manager if I remember correctly. That would let you remove that function and keep the backup functions.

I'll see if I can find out about the selective uninstall and post back. Maybe my findings will help others 8)

You can install the Client Security Solution separately, Software Installer just offered it up to my T41 on Monday. I would hope it's on the web site as well. As I recall it offered two options, the Password Manager and the SecureDriveVaultThingie.

I can't reiterate strongly enough, I have my T43 configured to login with a fingerprint swipe and nothing more. It's a combo of the options with the Fingerprint Reader software and the Client Security Solution. You oughtn't have to uninstall CSS.
