600x or T20/21?

#1 Post by lewdvig » Wed Jul 21, 2004 8:17 pm

I am finding some T series TPs in the 600x price range. What is the general consensus on the early Ts? I know how great the T40/41/42 are, but I don't feel like spending the money on something too fancy.

I have a T22, not sure how that aligns with your "early T" question, but I love it. I upgraded from the 600X. The 600X had a 450Mhz processor and the T22 has a 900Mhz processor. The speed difference is noticable, however the later Ts I think have a faster bus.

My T22 has the 100Mhz bus and so there is a similarity of the T to the 600X. Also both my machines have 256RAM.

If it were my decision to go with a 600X or my current T22, I would go with the T22, with only one caveat; the 600X has the best feeling keyboard i have ever used. I have gotten used to the T's keyboard, but if it were not for some speed requirements (GIS development) I would have stuck with the 600X. IOW, if I had typical office applications to run, I would see no reason to upgrade, but I did upgrade to be able to run my GIS software.

In rereading what I wrote I am not painting a good picture to convince you either way, but hopefully my comments will give some guidance. And of course, YMMV, and other much smarter people here will help out. And finally, FWIW, at least you are looking at the RIGHT machine; Thinkpad!!!

The T2X are a smidge thinner and a smidge longer/wider than the 600, have a larger screen (14.1 vs 13.3) more modern video chipset, better batteries and may have a built-in LAN. I loved the old 600 series but I would probably go for the T2X.

I agree with Keith - having had, well in fact I still own both but my daughters seem to have 'discovered' Thinkpads, I have to repeat what I wrote on another post with a similar question - the great advantages of the T2* series are the relatively cheap accessories like a 2nd hard drive adapter, a cd burner or a 2nd battery, which (even tho I love the 600's) make the T a real 'system' laptop

I think the best improvement on the T2x series a s compared to the 600X is the much brighter screen. It makes a big diffrence. Also the ThinkLight I like a lot.

Cheers,

I guess going from a 366 PII (600) to a 1.12 ghz PIII (T23) made the most difference to me.
I like the T23 better in every respect except the keyboard is not quite as solid as the 600 but it still acceptable.
Also the 600 series has that pesky battery problem too.

I'm pretty sure that everyone is aware of my love of the 600 series machines in general, and upgraded 600Xs in particular.

But even I would say to go for a T series at this point in time, preferably a clean T23 with some remaining warranty.
