Hard drive - need something cheap and quiet.

#1 Post by pcnoob » Fri Mar 03, 2006 1:37 pm

Well, I am running out of space on my 7gb hard drive so I am hunting for one at 20gb or so. Which brand is the most quiet? Can someone recommend a few to me? Thanks.

What budget are you looking at?

In my X21, I'm currently running a Samsung MP0402H, 40GB, 5400RPM.

Reasonably quiet, wicked fast, and only $64 at Newegg.

If you REALLY want 20GB, your best bet is a Hitachi 5K100, 20GB, 5400RPM for $56 at Newegg. However, the larger HDD is gonna be better, and for not much more money.

Not a problem.

Which one are you going with, BTW?

hmm, I don't like the sound of that last review. Is your hard drive like what that person says?

Not at all.

Looks like that reviewer got a dud drive. That happens with EVERY brand.

I will say that Seagate and Samsung are my two favorite brands. I've never had a single drive of either brand fail.

The 120GB Samsung that's recently out is a great buy - at $154 delivered, according to Pricewatch - and a great drive. I just installed one, and it's fast, quiet, and easy on battery life. There's a 100GB version also.
