UPS's physics defying updates

#1711 Post by paragc » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:42 am

I skulk these forums a lot, reading and learning from fellow thinkpaders - here is one that might give you some kicks:

Ordered a T61p on 3-20, shipping message on 3-23 and shipped on 3-24, now here are the laughs:

LOUISVILLE,KY, US 03/26/2008 3:35 A.M. IMPORT SCAN

03/25/2008 2:38 P.M. A SPECIAL CUSTOMS DELAY IS REQUIRED FOR THIS LIVE ENTRY

INCHEON, KR 03/26/2008 12:24 A.M. DEPARTURE SCAN

INCHEON, KR 03/25/2008 9:16 P.M. ARRIVAL SCAN

03/24/2008 10:23 P.M. ORIGIN SCAN
HK 03/24/2008 2:21 P.M. BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED

I realize that due to timezones and the Internation date line the above entry appears time warped but look at Anchorage, AK - it arrived at 3:12PM and departed at 3:05PM the same day. Departed before it arrived.
So, I called UPS to ask if they could tell me with any degree of certainty if the package was in HK, KR or US; he couldn't tell me for sure but believed the package was "in transit". :)

Perhaps this wait and watch excitement is part of the reason why we like ordering from Lenovo and I am afraid our whole experience will turn too mundane when Lenovo starts manufacturing in Mexico.

I got my T61 from Hong Kong to Rhode Island in 30 hours. Oh yeah. Shipped on a Thursday was there by Saturday. It was put to order on a Tuesday. The story as to why it got done so fast? Well I ordered a CTO T60 from the Lenovo website. Well I get two manufacture delays. over the next two weeks. That was unacceptable to me, so I call Lenovo to give them a piece of my mind. Well it turns out that they canceled the T60 so therefor they had to cancel my order, even though it was on their website at the time. So they try to get me to buy a whole nother system, full price, blah blah blah. So I hit them with my favorite line "Put your supervisor on the phone." "One moment, sir." Works every time. :) So I complain to the supervisor. I just want my computer, the one that I ordered. That's all I wanted. So the supervisor puts me on hold. I get put on the phone with the sales manager of the building. This isn't a guy at a call center. This guy is in an office. This is what he does for me. He tells me that unfortunately, they can't get me a T60. But he will give me a T61 with an upgraded graphics card, added bluetooth all at the price of the original order, which was $1,700. The T61 was easily over $2,000. On top of that he gave me an added discount. :o He expedited my order, meaning that it is at the top of IBM's prority list. It went straight to manufacture. Then they shipped it UPS Express Critical, the fastest shipping possible. It went from Hong Kong to Rhode Island in about 30 hours. I was amazed. They really took care of me and I am very appreciative of it. So that's my story! 8)

My T61p order

#1717 Post by blamblamblam » Thu Apr 10, 2008 12:40 pm

14.1" T61P
C2D T8300 (2.4ghz)
1gb RAM (1 x 1)
160gb HDD (7200 RPM)
Vista Home Premium
+ Turbo Memory
+ Bluetooth
+ 3-year NBD onsite warranty
+ Advanced Mini-dock

Ordered 4/09, Est. ship date 4/28

Some notes:

I'm planning to kick it up to 2 or 3gb of memory. I'll put in an order with New Egg when this thing finally ships.

I'm really hoping to get a unit that doesn't suffer from the C2D/Santa Rosa "cpu whine", since I just returned a Dell M1330 that was particularly loud. Knock on wood.

I probably could have saved like twenty or thirty bucks and gotten Vista Basic, since I'm not going to use Aero anyway. Oh well. I was a little miffed to find out (after my order) that the graphics chip in the 14" T61p had reduced memory bandwidth, since I could have saved about $90 and gotten a regular T61 for only a tiny difference in performance. Then again, I did pay extra to kick up from the T8100 to T8300, which probably doesn't amount to much. But all in all, this was not a bad deal when stacking the Lenovo Spring sale on with the 10% ecoupon that's been floating around these forums.

EDIT: The docking station shipped on 4/12, and the computer itself on 4/17.

Remarkable price after the various savings (including the "4%" PayPal discount that actually came to over $100). The pricing even includes a 3 year warranty. Almost seems like something isn't quite right; my last Thinkpad, a T42 14", came to over $1900 3.5 years ago. This seems to be a far more capable unit.

By the way, how many times/week do people check their order status? Or should that be how many times/day? :)

Check your order status twice a day (once in the morning and once at night)..

Don't keep checking on the status every hour because once there is a minor delay, you will get agitated very easily. Relax and wait for the new toy to arrive. Yayy!! :D

Hi guys ;)
I'm going to the US next month to congress. I'd like to buy my new thinkpad there, 'cause the same model is in the US more then 40% cheaper, than in EU.

So my questions are. How long does the order and delivery in the US take? Is 1 week enough?
What is better - to order item directly from Lenovo site, or from another online store?

Thanks for answer.

I've never been in the US. So I'm very curious ;)

you will face several challenges if you order while in the USA..

if ordering from lenovo:
1. will they take your foreign issue credit card..?
2. will lenovo deliver to an address OTHER THAN your CC billing address..?
3. will it actually arrive at the address of your choice before you leave..?
4. You can order any model and have all the options you want..

if ordering from another reseller:
same issues as #1 and #2 above..
3. Model choice will be more limited..

things to watch for include:
sales tax will be charged by lenovo..
having a secure address to ship to..
receiving the same discounts lenovo might be offering on the same model..

you can probably check on all these issues before you leave..'

there are more things to consider but i can't think of them all right now..

Thanks Bill.
I don't have many experiences with shopping in the US. But...

ad 1. I've VISA international card. I didn't have any problems with this card abroad in EU. Amazon.com accepted my card without problem. At worst, I can pay by credit card my collegue from the US...
ad 2. I don't know. Is there any other way of payment? For example in cash to messanger?
ad 3. That's the crucial question, IMHO. 'cause it isn't problem to order the notebook to address of my friend. But I unconditionally need to take the notebook to EU personally (duty tax, etc.).
ad 4. Is it possible to answer my question, how long does it last to delivery? I sent mail to Lenovo (question - could you estimate, how long take way for model xxxx), but no answer ;(
ad tax in US. I don't want any tax allowance in the US. It's there really cheaper with all costs ;) difference between the same type in the US (1540 USD) and the EU (1250€) is about 415 USD...

Ordered a T61 on April 29th. The original expected shipping date was 23 May and i received my Shipment Confirmation last night with an expected delivery of 12 May.

Not too bad for a T9300 with WIN XP - 15.4 WSXGA+ TFT - 2GB.

should i call to complain to anyone?

I ordered mine Saturday Apr. 26. It estimated shipping for May 12, then went all the way to May 22. It shipped out May 5th, with an estimated delivery date of May 13. UPS reports that my package is "on time" but my shipment was supposed to be UPS 4 Day.

I also thought UPS was supposed to ship all over the world in 5 business days.

Like another poster up there, I also ordered the T9300

It arrived yesterday 5-12. One thing to note for everyone. UPS requires YOUR signature when they deliver it. So if you cant be home or if you have someone at home you need to call UPS and either have them deliver it to the closest UPS store near your house instead or do what i did which was give my fiance a letter to give to UPS that had her name and my signature and the shipping numbers saying she was authorized to sign for me.

I purchased a Thinkpad a month ago while visiting US on a business trip. Lenovo and many other sellers require that you fullfill all or some of these requirements:
- you have a US-issued credit card
- your credit card's registered billing address is the same as your shipping address
- hotels may not be accepted as shipping addresses at all

After a lengthy research, I finally ordered my Thinkpad from Amazon. They accepted my european credit card, shipped to my hotel, had a suitable model in stock, and offered 1-day shipping. I made my order the previous day before my flight, and when I arrived at my hotel, my Thinkpad was already awaiting me :)

So, a week should be enough, if you make sure you're ordering a model that's in stock, and select 1-day shipping.

Remember to make sure the model you're ordering has international warranty. You can check this on Lenovo's website with the model number.

After returning home, I ordered a new keyboard, which cost 80euros (kb 25e and shipping 55e :o). European power cord is also needed, and shoudn't cost more than a few euros.

My T61p was ordered April 13. I experienced a delivery delay, I am told, because of my inclusion of the 9 cell lithium ion battery in my order. My estimated delivery date was changed from an initial date of 1 May to a later date of 3 June. I received my shipment confirmation on Monday of this week (12th) and the laptop arrived before 10 am today, Wednesday (14th). All in good condition. I send this message from the new machine.

I just order this one : Thinkpad T61p 6460-D8G :D

http://www.rueducommerce.fr/Ordinateurs ... n-15-4.htm

First I was thinking about one from Thinkpad World (ThinkPad T61p 6460-DVU), but with shipping, taxes and VAT (+ french keyboard), it's useless.

The only down side of the 6460-D8G is the six cells battery. But I can order a 9 cells later.

Speaking from quite a bit of experience when ordering from Lenovo, it's the fact that one cannot truly rely on what you are being told. Nor are the email updates very accurate (if at all).

Recently I ordered an optical drive for my T60p, as the one I had removed and stored, (so as to install a second hard drive in the bay) somehow "disappeared". Anyway I absolutely had to have one, so I placed my order via the Lenovo site online. The status was "ships in 3 weeks". Well again as I have learned over and over that means nothing. Thus I was prepared to wait for a very extended period of time at the worst. Imagine my surprise when two days later I received it! Conversely when I ordered my T60 it took over 8 weeks, and several email updates where the dates jumped around like fleas on a dogs back. Whenever I called in the responses ranged from giving me some arbitrary info to "sir, we have no record of your order!"

Therefore I decided to reframe the way I look at it, and refrain from setting any expectations. I say to myself, it will get here when it gets here. Do I like this....NO, however my only other choice is to buy from a reseller, which I have done on more than one occasion. Next up is that story.

The lure for me is that I save 9% sales tax if I order from an authorized Lenovo Dealer. The particular reseller I deal with usually has between 125 and 250 ThinkPads in stock, therefore I get it the next day. It's almost too good to be true as this particular reseller is exceptional. They always process the order lightning fast, and get it out the same day I ordered it. The computer arrives just exactly as from Lenovo in the same packaging factory sealed. So what is the downside? Just one thing. If I get a bad one, they are super strick on the return policy. One has only 15 days, if they have the same one in stock then it's easy they will replace it. However if they do not, based on the haphazard way tha Lenovo handles these things, then the reseller is left handing much like we are. If you want to simply get a credit, it's 15% restocking fee.

Therefore it can be a very tough decision. Fortunately each of the 6 ThinkPads I have ordered through this reseller, have been perfect thus I have saved a tremendous amount of time, money and got the computer the next day.

I ordered my T61p on 5/19/06, it had an estimated shipping date of 6/9/08, and I got the shipping notification that it shipped today 5/22/08. I can't wait. I've been wanting a Thinkpad for years, ever since my brother got a T43p.

How exciting.... this is what I mean about unreliable shipping estimates, and not in a bad way, just the facts. It's really about the overwhelming demand that has always existed for ThinkPad computers. They are simply the best!

I'm really happy to hear that you are getting one, as you have no idea how great these are until you have one of your own.

Congratulations and Enjoy!..... remember there is plenty of great info here should you need it.

Give us a report on your new lappy when you have a chance.

Cheers!
