Can you order (by phone) excluding the WAN card? Trying to keep my cost down and still get a killer laptop.

Yes, you can. Check the tabook for variants of this machine without Verizon WWAN. There are plenty.

Thanks pundit... Wow the rep on the phone said no way. They wouldn't configure a 60p without it.

Now, how do I find that tabook. Sorry, I'm a newbie to ThinkPads.

The latest one (I think) can be fetched from here.

Check page 63, it has variants of the T60p without Verizon WWAN.
