ipconfig & wireless LAN - "internal error"

#1 Post by noetus » Fri Mar 03, 2006 8:20 pm

I am using Access Connections (4.11a) with the Atheros 11a/b/g/ Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter with driver 4.1.102.133 (12/21/2005) on T42. Access Connections seems to connect OK to my university wireless system, but "ipconfig /all" at the Command Prompt returns:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

Anyone know why? Should I worry about this? The campus support people couldn't explain it. (I was also having a problem where the connection was being dropped every time the lease had to be renewed, about every 10 minutes, but that seems to be fixed now that I set Access Connections to enable automatic location switching.)

When at home on my ethernet/DSL (not wireless) connection, ipconfig returns a normal display of information.

i've also experienced this on my t41 and eventually traced it to the fact that i am running a "newer" wireless driver than offered by IBM...at some point, iinstalled one off of Windows Update. I first noticed it over 9 months ago but I'm unsure when it actually began.

i have never noticed an actual functional issue with it....the only visible symption i noticed is the ipconfig issue.

at one point, i did try rolling back to a previous driver off of the Software Updater and it corrected the issue and i forgot all about it until i patched again at Windows Update and once again got a newer version. i haven't bothered to roll back since then (months ago?) as i don't do anything specific with ipconfig that don't more often do in other ways that still work.

if it really bothers you, try rolling back to an earlier driver and/or Access Connections.
