T23 suddenly shutdowns very often

#1 Post by baraider » Sun Mar 05, 2006 12:49 am

Hi all,

Having my T23 for the last year or so and had absolutely no problem with it.
Recently it just shutdown very often...sometimes it stays on for days...sometimes it just shutdowns completely. When it boots again...it log in for couple minutes and shut down again.

I thought it was something with the virus or something i installed so i format the HD and install XP again but during the installation, it shuts down several time during the process...i just aborted the installation.

Using Notebook Hardware Control software and it shows my CPU temp in 60C range one minutes and 95C another minutes...there is nothing to know why the temp jumps that quickly.

So the question is....is this the end of my T23 because of the infamous dying mobo symtomp?

Is there anything i can do to find out the curlpit?

Is the fan running prior to the system shutting down?

It definately sounds like a heat issue. Maybe replacing the fan will help.

I haven't noticed about the fan....it just so sudden...

do you think putting some paste on the cpu will help? Maybe i should open it up and clean the dust inside?

I just so worry about the dying mobo....

I don't blame you for worrying, I am trying to track down a replacement mobo for a T23 for less than $100.

Adding Arctic Silver and blowing the system out certainly wouldn't hurt.

oh well, I think it's def the overheating issue.

Looking at the temp program...it showing the cpu temp rising from 60 to over 70 and jumping to 85, 95C when i play overload it with playing HD clips, music, etc...

The fan kicks in and it auto shutdown...

When i reboot, all the programs gray out, can't click on anything....and it will auto shutdown again...i may have it working again after 2,3 times like that..

I think when the CPU temp cool down, it will be ok...

It's weird that the CPU load is always less than 10%..

So i think the fan can't lower the heat anymore.

I don't why i never have this problem before? The fan is sitll working obviously...

What part of fan i can get for my T23....can i get a better fan?

a bit of update

I took out the cooling fan and there is a layer of thermal grease between the cpu and the contact point with the fan.

I look at it and the grease layer is almost gone :D

BINGO....i hope this is the problem

Anyway, i put on some Artilic Silver 5....

Boot on fine, the temp is around 45 iddle now....It will take a while to get to the optimal temp...

Let's cross our fingers and pray that this is the solution for the overheating problem.

If the fan is turning on prior to the system turning off, then the fan is probably ok. I don't know if there is a more powerful fan that you could install, since the T23 is the highest model in the T2x series.

Hopefully, the Arctic Silver will work.

seems like the artic silver doesn't help much

Haven't got a reboot since i installed it till today when i play a AVI clips and the temp jump to 97C.

I have no idea why the temp jumps that high now since i have been watching dvd, clips on the machine for the last year or so

It just started rebooting for the last 2 weeks or so.

I think the fan is still working but nolonger kicks in high gear anymore....

So what the next step?

Install WIN XP would help?

New fan?

A Windows installation won't help. I would go with a new fan. Make sure to pick up the correct FRU.

Yeah, a fan might help. It could just be that yours is getting too old now.

Question though, does your hard drive temp rise as well? Are you using a 5400rpm or faster hard drive?

if you look at my signature, you'll see that i'm using the Hitachi 7200rpm 60gb drive...i have used it for over a year without a problem.

when the cpu temp rise from 50ish to 70ish, the HD temp is stable at 45C....

so i think the problem is with the fan that doesnt push out much air anymore.

i'll order one from ebay....

latest update:

my T23 hasn't shutdown whatever i tried to do :D since my last post

I think the Artic silver took a day or two to fully work....

I tried to run virus scanner, play video clip, ad-aware scanning on the backgrounds...and the temp hovers around 66ish...

Before the artic silver, if i run ad-aware only, the temp will jump to 85ish and shutdown eventually..

Do you guys think i'm safe?

You might be. I have heard that the AS takes a little while to work. The compound has to properly adhere.

If you already ordered the fan, it wouldn't hurt to try that too, or hold on to it for later.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Arctic Silver does take a day or 2 to fully set up. I would replace the fan as soon as you receive it from e-bay. Clean it with rubbing alcohol, then apply some AS. You shouldn't need to re-load XP or anything like that. This is a simple hardware fix, nothing more.

Baraider,

I didn't note reading that you had cleaned the existing fan!?

Pull the fan and use canned air to blow out the air channels. You'd be absolutely amazed at the amount of junk, hair, etc. can be sucked into the channels and decrease the airflow severely.

Can you hear the fan speed increase when the temperature spikes? Normally the fan will speed up and slow down in direct proportion to the CPU temperature. If not, then you definitely need a new fan.

It's been 4,5 days using the improved T23 :D and it's never been shutdown...Knock on wood.

I tried to run heavy apps and the temp never go pass 75C....running 46C as i browse, and typing this.

Sometimes I wish it's dead so i have an excuse to get the new T60, but sometimes it's just to stubborn to die.... and I keep on using it

a quick update....

:) nothing new really...the t23 has been running for more than 2 weeks straight...24/7...never reboot and the temp hangs around 48-58C...

I'm quite sure it could last me a long time...till i can afford a new Txx or when Vista arrives whichever comes first.

T23's are rather amazing machines. Mine continues to surprise me. I am very glad that you appear to have saved your machine.

Be sure to let us know if the problem shows up again.
