t42p + software development

#1 Post by activelink » Sun Mar 05, 2006 10:20 am

hi,

i m thinking to get a t43 or the newer duo core t60 - but having trouble deciding. i prefer the duo core but it's a bit pricy for my pocket.

i am planning to get t42/p if i can get it at a reasonable price on ebay then t60 duo core when the price settled down. i may wait forever because these machine are keeping their value well :)

if anyone have experience using t42/p machine for software development, please share your experience of how t42/p perform. i would like to take it with me to compile java code sometime in the park/library... if it can cope with video editing is a bonus.

cheers!

I think either of these types of machines would be fine for software development, if I had to choose (for my primary machine), I'd go with:

1) Dual core processor.
2) 7200 rpm disk with 8 meg of cache.
3) Lots of ram (I use 2 gig).
4) sxga+ display (or higher if you can stand it).

Here's the reasons why: I use my R40 (not a T42/p but since you've gotten no responses...) for java development (Eclipse with MyEclipse IDE plugin, SUN Java Studio Enterprise since it's now free and has very good round trip UML support - including sequence diagrams which MyEclipse lacks). What I've found is that the 7200 RPM disk helps tremendously when starting Eclipse (many small files to load), app servers, etc.

Also, the 2 gig of ram recommendation may or may not apply depending on how you use the machine. In my case, I deploy to UNIX platforms, so I've got a VMWare image with tomcat and my test database (db2) installed. The extra ram allows me to allocate a descent amount to the VM (768 meg) and still have plenty left over for Windows 1.25 gig). The 7200 RPM disk helps out here as well. Plus ram is very cheap right now, so it's a $150-$200 indulgence...

Dual core is a preference (for me) based on all of the above executing on the machine in addition to Firefox, Gaim, etc - normal use applications. When I upgrade my laptop I'll also go with sxga+ resolution over xga as xga is just too limiting in the IDE.

Good luck...

Hi,

I am currently using my T43, 2668-92U(I upgraded the RAM to 1.5G) mostly for software development. I am running VS.NET 2005 and SQL 2005 on the T43, and it has plently of power. I also use it to convert VHS to DVD format with any problems. I think the T43 should have plenty of processing power for any software developments. Hope that help!

I use my T42 for development mainly. Sometimes i use Zend Studio (big bulky java IDE), but usually just fire up editplus :)

I only have 1gig of ram and if I'm running too many things at once it suffers. Like if I try to have firefox with a few tabs, zend studio and itunes playing in the background i run into issues. Like when zend studio does the code completion or inline error checking itunes will skip a little. It is very annoying so that's why I don't use zend studio that much.
