My HDD will not spin down!

#1 Post by sodjdobe » Sun Mar 05, 2006 11:27 am

I set the turn off hard disk after 3 min option on, but my hdd just wont spin down. I searched this forum for any solutions but i couldnt find it. It would be great to spin the hdd down, so my t42 would be even more quiet. I am using fan control and NHC. I tried all the options in my power management but it just doesnt work.
My hdd is HTS5480809AT00

In NHC, there is a "Hard Disk" tab. If you go to "Advanced Power Management," you can choose to "Enable Spin Down" and choose the "Acoustic Management" to be "Quiet". Hope that helps.

Thanks for your, reply... i already figured out what was wrong. I went into bios in i had to select "customized" option when the ac is unpluged, and enable spin down in the bios. Now the hdd can spin down but i have another problem:

I was hoping, that when i am writing in word or im browsing the web, the hdd would spin down and stay that way if i dont use it. I have also paging file on RAMDISK. But there must be an app running in background that is using the hdd so it spins up from time to time.

It would really help if someone could help me with that.

Thank you,

Jure

Hi, I have simular problems with my z60m http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

There are a couple of monitor tools which you could use to see what's going on with your drive (assuming you're running Windows):
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Diskmon.html

Also, try to startup windows in safe-mode (F8 when start-up) and see the problem still occurs. And, if you have a HD-protection tool, disable it.

All these suggestions didn't help me though. Maybe you're lucky.

Ok thanks...I will try all of that and see if it works. I tried allready killing the processes in taskbar to see wich one makes the hdd spin up without success.

Ok so the thing is: I went into safe mode and waited for 3 minutes for HDD to spin down. So it spun down after 3 min. and it didnt spin just by itself as it does in normal mode. So i gues there is a service or an app that is constantly accessing the HDD...i wish i knew which one it is! If anyone solved this problem or has an idea what it might be, please help.

This utility, Autoruns, is a good utility to see what all services/processes are started.
Use this as starting point, and justify for yourself why you need a particular service.
Best part is you can right click a service and it shows you option to google for it!!! You can then read it's details!
Slow & Tedious, but a clean way to do it.
