T60 Upgrade Question

#1 Post by baehrlich » Sun Mar 05, 2006 11:50 am

I'm currently using a T60 which came with a 60GB HD. If I wanted to buy a second drive (for the same bay), what type of specs do I have to look for so that it will fit (have the same type of connectors). I know that I need a Serial ATA drive, but are there any other variables to look for (other than 2.5 inch size)? I'm looking at the Lenovo 100GB 7200 RPM drive but would love to find a cheaper option.

Sorry if this is a really basic question, but I'm relatively new at this type of discussion.
Thanks

1. Go to the accessory page for ThinkPads.
2. Enter your computer's model name in that little search box somewhere at the bottom right of the page.
3. Pick the drive you want!

I have to ask the obvious question here....

When did you order it and when did you get it?

any SATA/2.5" drive will work, the 100gb/7200 model is avaliable at Newegg last i checked.

T60 ordering info.

#5 Post by baehrlich » Sun Mar 05, 2006 6:28 pm

I had an office pc emergency (no, not a politically correct one) and got it through PC Connection. They had it in stock so I guess I was lucky that it really had the specs I needed (with the exception of HD and extra RAM, which I got from Crucial and installed myself).

I'd be happy to answer any other questions people might have.

Thanks for the Newegg tip. Is this the one that would work?

If so, it's less than half the price of the Lenovo "branded" one. Beyond the obvious, is there a reason?

Which model number did you purchase and can you hear the fan running under normal load in a quiet environment?

[Edit for clarification: The fan and heatsink are at the back left corner of the laptop, not to be confused with the sound of a 7200RPM hard drive in the near right corner.]

I bought the 195144u.
The fan can absolutely NOT be heard under normal operation. I did hear it (although it's quiet) after prolonged use on battery followed by use under ac power. I have a 9 cell battery, which is giving me over 7 hours of power with the wireless antenna on.

That is fantastic news because:

1. Someone else had reported that the fan was loud (perhaps it was a 15" model).

2. Yours is the first shipping 14" Centrino Duo that I've read of. They must have all the molds made and that's one less thing that can tie up the shipment of my unit!

3. Reviews have given wildly different figures on battery use. Yours is in line with what I would have expected.

You've been very helpful -- could I talk you into pouring water into your keyboard to test the weep holes and auto-hibernate on water detection feature? :D

Hmm, PC Connection does claim to have the 195144U and the 1953D7U in stock. Wonder how that is? Shouldn't Lenovo ship to it's own direct order customers first?

baehrlich, want to be the first one to write a review of the 14.1" mode for notebookreview.com? You should submit something to them.

baehrlich, is the front edge (where the LCD latches attach) the obtuse flavor that we saw on the Korean review of the 14" model, or the pointy flavor we saw on the 15" notebook review writeup?

interested to know if the obtuse thing is a regional thing or if its all T60's with the 14" screen..

The front edge is the blunt edge (or obtuse, as you descibe it) version. Definitely not like the T43 sharp edge.
