How many process is to many?

right now, with just the thinkpad pre-installed applications running i have ~60 processes on at all times... This is with firefox and taskmanager included. I also have the CSS software installed. How many do you guys have running?

Custom install, only selected IBM apps running, plus firefox, opera, skype and few other things: 41 processes.

Only 40 processes running, consisting of..

Clean install of Windows XP
Whatever thinkpad software the IBM software installer defaulted into running
AVG Antivirus software
GAIM
Bittorrent
ZoneAlarms
NHC (notebook hardware control)
PGP (Pretty Good Privacy)
Firefox

I think 60 is a bit much. Even my desktop, which seems to load more applications are startup, is only running 40processes now.

I suggest running spybot to check to see if there's any programming running that shouldn't be.

Ditto, on being too many processes.

I am working on a T21 right now and I only have 45 processes running, but that is because I have a couple of extra things running on this one that i don't normally run.

I don't think it matters. I have 74 processes running on my ThinkPad right now and 59 on my Desktop. On both machines, the CPU runs at less than 2 percent more than 98 percent of the time. Both machines have lots of memory ( more than 200 Mb) free and can easily free up memory if I run a Virtual Machine. ... JD Hurst

I know for a fact that nothing is running that shouldnt be. I have run spybot, adaware, and a virus scan on the laptop. It is only a few weeks old and has been like this from the start. If i look at the processes w/ that sysinternals program process explorer, everything is signed by lenovo or IBM... So i'm not too sure what i need and what I dont.

I've got 89 ATM, though I do run with 1.5GB of RAM, and have 99% free CPU about 99.8% of the time.

IMHO processes aren't bad, it's CPU cycles consumed, and %RAM occupied that's the problem.

I remember when > 1 on top of the core OS was bad.

What difference does it make if your machine is running the way you want? If no CPU is saved (in my case), then there is only memory to save, and since I have spare memory, there isn't much to worry about. I once listed all my processes just to see, and there wasn't anything to remove of any consequence. ... JD Hurst

Good point. I am just used to having around 30 running on my desktop, this just seemed like a lot. I have 1.5 gb of ram so there is still room to spare.

Ive got 69 running on my Z60M.
And i had about 30 running on my main PC before the mobo failed.

I am pretty uptight about each program that is running. I know what every process is there for.

I am running 34 processes including Winamp, MSN, Firefox, AV, TP Fan Controller, RMClock and my Scheduling program.

The few IBM programs I have running are TpKmapMn which makes my right ALT a windows key, and the Power Manager... I don't need on-screen to see what buttons I press, and my Wifi, presentation all run native in Windows.

Looking at about 240MB/1000MB of Memory Usage.

The biggest thing for me with running too many processes is the startup time. There is a lot of additional extra software provided by IBM which could be handy to some users, but in my case I have very little need for. Getting rid of some of them has improved my startup time considerably as I have the older T40 which has the sluggish 3600rpm HDD.

This first bothered me when I saw how my sister's Toshiba startup time (after logon) was next to nothing (15 seconds) compared to my two minutes!

I tend to only start my machine once or twice in a day. So two minutes is fine for me. I know it is not fine for others, however.

Many of the startup processes that consume memory and start time but not CPU are important to me: Firewall, AntiVirus, Access Connections, VMWare processes, VPN Client, Active Sync, and a few others. So I would rather patiently wait for a good start, and then operate fast and smooth for the next several hours. YMMV. ... JD Hurst
