T43p Hard drive upgrade...
T43p Hard drive upgrade...
I have a T43 2687-DDU. I would like to upgrade the HDD. I was unaware of the 2010 errors prior, so the samsung 120gb hdd I got would not work in the unit, nor would the firmware update CD work on that drive. What drives work with this unit right out of the box, or with the hard drive firmware updater? IBM telles me that they dont even have an options drive larger than 60gb for this model T43. I can't muster a definitive answer from the posts I read on the forum Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!
7K100 100G from Hitachi, the only big and fast enough one, upgradable for official firmware

Hi,
The drive I can recommend -- which would be somewhat larger, and a bit faster -- is the 80GB 7200rpm Hitachi drive. I was able to successfully upgrade the firmware using messar's method.
Specifically, the drive model # is:
Hitachi HTS721080G9AT00
Granted, it isn't the 120GB of space you want, I realize. But it is a bit larger, and a bit faster than a 60GB 5400rpm drive.

I got the 5k100 100GB, and it isn't upgradable
.
Otherwise a great drive (great performance/battery life)... just no good firmware.
Come on IBM... you can fix this. There's no reason the Hitachi OEM drives are lower quality than the IBM rebranded drives. They are exactly the same minus a software upgrade, sticker, and $100+ on the pricetag.

T43 (2687-DUU) - 1.86GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 100GB 5400 (non IBM-firmware Hitachi 5k100) HD, Fingerprint Scanner, 802.11abg/Bluetooth, ATI x300
I'm afraid to upgrade my hard drive now. I had a T43 266846U before and when I tried to put a travelstar 7200RPM 80GB drive in the computer it caused the motherboard to die. IBM replaced the motherboard and when I put the hard drive back in it then the motherboard died again. I put the hard drive in a Dell Latitude and it worked fine..... strange!

Re: T43p Hard drive upgrade...
The Fujitsu MVH2080AH (80GB) does. The standard IBM firmware upgrade procedure also applies without any problems.eni2006 wrote:What drives work with this unit right out of the box, or with the hard drive firmware updater?
Cheers,
Bill
this has been driving me to distraction for the last week.
i purchased a 100 gig drive to put in laptop as upgrade.
bios tell me to piss off
, figured out how to tell it to get lost.
tried maxbalst to do clone, no good
partition magic no good
ibm R & R3 will NOT recognise new hard drive
totaly [censored] off
great computer but upgrading sucks

this page has some good information about off-the-shelf drives that are compatible:

That list showed a Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST980825AS 80GB Serial ATA drive. I plan on ordering that drive. Can anyone else confirm that this was a "easy" install when upgrading the hard drive?

Using a second 2.5" drive in the Ultra Bay Slim Adapter
Hi there,
Are there any firmware issues using non-IBM approved 2.5" drives as backup drives with the Ultra Bay Slim Adapter. Or does that only affect the "system" drives?
Does anyone have experience with this?
Also, which of the following drives would you recommend:
160GB Fujitsu MHV2160BT 4200rpm
120GB Fujitsu MHV2120BH 5400rpm
Thanks,
Scanvest
