laptop sleeves

#1 Post by T43 » Mon Mar 06, 2006 7:15 pm

Hi All,
Great forum! I just bought my first laptop (T43). I am going on a 18 months trip and my new T43 will be with me. Any suggestion on laptop sleeves that will protect against scratches and minimal protections against dropping?

I have been looking at these:
http://www.ebags.com/products/index.cfm ... D=GOOGFEED
http://segai.com/SS_301.asp
http://www.radtech.us/Products/SpecialtyBags.aspx (got my eyes on the Glove;Rebound looks promising as well)

Thanks for any advice. Oh, sorry if I posted in the wrong area. By the way, my T43 is awesome! Love it!

I have a Tom Bihn Soft cell
http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0374
it is THE perfect fit for my 14.1" T43.

Looking at the Segai, if you have a 14" T43 the 15" Powerbook sleeve won't fit, go with the 14" iBook. The 17" Powerbook doesnt look like it'd fit the 15". Itd be a squeeze.

Thanks Sparta: I will be backpacking so weight is very important to me. How much does your Tom Bihn Soft Cell weight? Their site has limited information on their product and the link (when click on the large image) is broken. I am also concern about moisture (water spills).

ditto on the booqbag

No sleeve is going to protect a laptop from a drop, it might protect from the ocassional bump. I have one of those booqback sleeves and it works nicely protecting my T42 from scratches, spills/splashes and the occasional bump. Plus it is a totally enclosed sleeve while many sleeves have an opening. I would not trust any sleeve alone as the sole protection from drops. I place my laptop in a Kensington 17" Contour Bag. The extra space on the sides of the bag provide additional shock protection and the extra compartments provide more carrying capacity.

it weighs next to nothing, I carry it in my backpack all the time. like it was said, it won't protect it from a fall, but if you are carrying your thinkpad in your backpack, its a great way to protect it from getting scratched, bumped, and cracked.

I use a couple of kinds of over-the-shoulder bags, but be aware that few if any sleeves will protect a laptop from pressure against the lid. My bags have padded compartments for the TP, but I also stick a Targus Traveler CoolPad in a pocket between me and teh TP, so when the bag bumps against me (and it will, it will), the bump doesn't put unchecked pressure against the screen.

The only time I find a little TrackPoint "footprint" on my screen is when the TP has been in a bag for a while. ;)

You can remedy marks on the screen by buying a $0.20 piece of felt and trimming it to size. I use this since I ride my bike carrying my laptop in a neoprene sleeve in my bookbag with books.

Thank you all for replying. I went with the RadTech Rebound because of pricing/better fit and quicker tech-support. I will let everyone know how I like RadTech sleeves.

I use a lint-free screen wipe.

The little "footprint" is a symptom, and not the risk that I was pointing out. Thinking a laptop is "protected" because it's in a sleep or padded compartment is naive.

I just received the WaterFields Sleeve. The best made sleeve I have ever seen. I was so taken by their design quality that I send them a good note of appreciation which they replied back asking my permission to post it on their website. Just love the Sleeve..... something of great quality that the ThinkPad rightfully deservs Smile

The Waterfield sleeve construction does look great but what do you think about a whole side being open? Water or anything could enter there it seems.

The whole side is not open!!!! That is their very basic design they offer.. and you will givin options to add a Flap-cover, strap and piggy-back before you check out.. see the pics below:

http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleeveca ... piggy2.jpg

I took all opetions except the piggy-back and its still got a pocket behind to hold the power supply.. its a totally awesome bag and fits my T43 PERFECT.

I am a be-ez fan. They were actually made to fit apple laptops, but recently be-ez added a pc product line.

But in fact, the 14" thinkpad fits the apple ibook sleeve perfectly. The line of PC sleeves is actually much more thick :-)

Does anyone have a suggestion for a sleeve which will work for a 15" T43, with a 9-cell battery plugged in?

I ordered the RadTech Rebound notebook sleeves. The T43 fits good and tight inside the Rebound. I like the Rebound so far. Memory foam is the way to go with laptop sleeves; regardless of the brand. I took a few pictures, link to them below.

thanks for posting up some real live pics of your sleeve! i also have some sleeves from my other notebooks, but none of them leave the indentations as yours does. I seriously think i'm going to purchase a stm sleeve.

edit* i just realized it might not fit so well with a 9 cell. =( i also was wondering if the waterfield sleeves would be to bulky to carry in a backpack with books and folders.

For a couple of years I carried my T42 in a slim LowePro sleeve/case, just a laptop sleeve with two front pockets to (just) stuff in the AC adapter, power cord and a small mouse. The sleeve went in an old, sloppy looking Tenba Traveler bag, which is a multifunctional photo/travel shoulder bag. I took out the camera interior with its dividers, added a piece of high-density foam to the bottom and stuffed the sleeve into it, together with all the other stuff I took as carry-on: papers, my Psion PDA, tickets, pens, (sun)glasses, a toothbrush, contact lens holder, one or two magazines and a pocket novel.
Recently I got myself a pre-owned X30 through eBay, and I have ordered a Crumpler 12" Gimp neoprene sleeve for it, so I will have more space in the Tenba. The X30 came in the standard IBM laptop case, a monster of a bag with a choice of air-foam shock protection fillers in the laptop compartment, and lots of compartments for accessories. That case was the only protection the seller used to mail the laptop in (inside a cardboard box obviously!), and it survived the mistreatment of Royal Airmail without a scratch. The only problem I have with that kind of bag is that it screams 'expensive laptop gear, mug me!'. And it is so large it would not fit under an aircraft seat. For a 12-inch notebook it is extreme overkill. Obviously the neoprene sleeve will not hold the AC adapter, so I'll stuff that in a small case or bag. I have an ultraslim USB DVD/CD burner with the X30, which fits into one of those typical squarish nylon, lightly padded CD wallets from CaseLogic, meant for two dozen or so back-to-back CDROMs. I took out the CD sleeve interior, the burner slips right in with room for the USB cables, a Cardbus USB minihub and two or three blank CDs in thin CD envelopes. In the Tenba bag, it is easier to fit stuff in if it is divided into little packages than if it is one big, fat laptop case with bulging front pockets.

I can add to my last post thet I just received my 12 inch Crumpler Gimp, and it is a very nice little sleeve indeed. Of course it has no pockets for accessories, but it seems to offer good protection, with thick neoprene and an immensely sturdy zipper. Looks good too.

To me this looks like a piracy product.
