Z60T or X60?

Hi, guys, it's my first post here. Great forum!

I ordered my first laptop, TP Z60T 1.8GHZ 512MB 80GB XPP on Feb 09, and I'm going to receive it within a couple of days. (I got the track no. already.) But now I saw the X60 is out on the US website (I'm in Canada). The problem is that it seems like most people are unhappy with their Z60 and on the other hand, poeple bought X60/s are pretty satisfied. Is there a quality difference between these two? I know it's a subjective question, but still, can anyone help me make up my mind? Should I return the Z60T and order an X60 or should I give the Z60T a chance?

An x60 is an unltraportable laptop, while the z60t is a widescreen, they are designed with a little bit different purpoeses. Id say that there are more people satisfied with their z60s than the ones that are unhappy. The quality should be about the same, along with the safety features and I would not base my laptop decision between quality differences with these two laptops.

I was also considering the X60... but the price difference is huge.
I think the price difference is big enough for me to like Z60T

I'm a university student, and I often use iTunes, Explorer, Word, and Adobe Reader at the same time. Because my desk top is really not doing well with all these programs on, I thought the Duo is the best for me. And I will bring it to school everyday, so ultraportable is also great. However, wide screen is good for working on two windows at the same time. It will be helpful while writing a paper.

Because the X60 was on US website, I didn't realize there is such a huge price difference. Well, if that's the case, I better try out the Z60T first. Anyway, Lenovo said I can receive it within 4 weeks, and now it's the 4th week, so maybe I will be lucky and won't have the strange noise problem on my TP as well. But still, why are there so many complaints about Z60T, while people have X60 seem so happy?

Hey... since your in Canada also..
I'd thought i'd mention www.visaperks.ca
If you order a laptop through visaperks and of course pay with your visa credit card.. you save like 10-15%.

Its still not too late to cancel your order and save some money if your willing to wait.

My wait was about 3-4 weeks.. but i had to harrass them every week.

I'm liking my Z60T and i just got it today. Slowly adjusting to minor things... like where my usb ports are and the ThinkVantage software... but other than that... its great...

If money wasn't an issue... I would have gotten the X60... But you have to also consider how in order to use a cd/dvd drive in the X60, you have to buy the dock also... so the cost gets higher and higher.

Another suggestion is checking out the entry level T60's...
They go for around 2200CDN and up.. and offer the duo core if your looking for duos. IMO, the extra 700+ from what i'm paying for the Z60T isn't worth the upgrade... in the long run... i can use that money towards another system or a better desktop.

It's good that you like your Z60T. I will receive mine on Thursady, and hope I will like it too. T60 is a little bit too big for school, and I rather have a wide screen for that size.

Yea... I went with the Z60T cause its the only small size widescreen IBM has. If the X series was widescreen... i'd consider it... But it'd have to be at a lower price point.

I have had my Z60M for a week now, and I'm completely satisfied with it. I have had many ThinkPads, T20, T23, T30, T42, T43, T60 on order.
Yes, have changed a few things but I like change, and they kept the quality up to the ThinkPad standard. This is a great computer!

WOW, you really own a lot of Thinkpads, Archer6.

It's good to hear this kind of positive thoughts now, cause my Z60T is coming today. Well, hope they can make it today. It should be last Wednesday, but UPS totally messed it up!

I'm happy with Lenovo's speed though.

I can't believe it, but I'm really typing this reply on my Z60T right now! This machine is beautiful, and the build quality is just the best I'm ever seen. Loving it!

I'm happy to hear that your new computer has arrived. There's nothing quite like the terrific quality of a ThinkPad. I spend many hours a day on mine and it' really a pleasure to have such a nice keyboard, display, and overall excellent laptop.

I am very excited as I watch the tracking progess on UPS of my new T60, yesterday It left Hong Kong and today it's in Ontario Ca. Which is 500 miles from me. The revised delivery date to my door in Central CA. is Monday 13th before noon. So I'm crossing my fingers that nothing changes.

oh~ That is awesome! a z60 and a t60...

Let's go back to the topic...the x60 is finally out on Canadian's website, and the price is just way too expensive for me. z60 is not in the same price range as the x60 and t60. Nevertheless, the z60t is great. it's pretty fast, not heavy, not too big, yet the screen is big enough to process two Word windows side by side. And it's sooooo good looking. t60 also looks great. i saw one in school yesterday, and i was really amazed by how cool it looks.

But do you know what store has T60's on display in Canada?
I returned my Z60T and i'm holding off on DuoCore's... so T60 is in consideration..

Hi, ericssonboi, I don't know any store has T60 right now, but I do know that UBC's campus library (not the one in Downtown) has a computer shop, which has IBM on display. Do you live near Vancouver? If you do, I can go check it for you, and let you know when will they have T60 in store. They only have T4X for now, I think.

I'm in Ottawa and there aren't a lot of places that do carry IBMs...
Compusmart for one does carry a few... but only the T4X's...

But at the price point.. i just couldn't justify making that purchase...

I think i might hold off until the Z60T goes duo core..
It might take a while... but i got till this Sept until the new term begins

A dual core laptop would be awesome, but I agree that the price is too high right now. For people that can afford it, I think it will be a great long-term investment. For now, I'll be sticking with my Z60T and enjoying the widescreen.

So true... at the same time... I don't want to sacrifice the widescreen as i enjoy watching movies and tv shows off my laptop..

Right now... the Duo Core T60's aren't priced that bad... with ones starting at 2k + ... thats why i'm kind of considering it if the Z60T's don't get updated..

For 2 days now I have been doing a side by side comparison of my 2 new ThinkPads:

T60 CoreDuo 2.0 ghz, 1gig ram, 100 gig @ 5400 rpm. 15" TFT
Z60M M740 1.73 ghz, 512 ram, 60gig @ 5400 rpm. 15.4" TFT

Here are my thoughts, observations, etc.
I need the Core Duo as I use some applications that are very demanding. On the other hand if you do not need heavy duty computing power, I would highly suggest the Z60. Considering the configuration, it's really fast and just as nice as the T60 in many ways. Especially if you go for the Z60M widescreen. Looking at it alongside the T60 it is simply amazing how much more screen real estate you get. Especially when working with two, or more windows open.
Hopefully this helps those of you who are undecided.

So your saying the Z60M has a lot more screen space compared to the T60. Are you keeping both?

Sorry, I don't have any comparison pics.

Yes, I am keeping both as they are for different applications.

In addition I always keep two current ThinkPads with mirror images on the drives so they are exactly alike. This way if one goes down, I'm not caught out without a computer. Its the tool I use to make my living.

How do you have them "mirrored"?
Are you just backup up stuff on an external hd or is there a program the constantly mirrors them as long as your connected to the home network?

I use Acronis True Image software. In addition I use an external drive.

for me, the main difference between two types is just the portability. I mostly use my laptop in the office or at home. From this point of view, Z60t is the best model for me.

I dont know the performance of Napa, but right now the Sonama is more than enough for me

Realizing that I did not respond to your question on the X60 I wanted to get back to you.
The X series are also very nice computers. I have several friends with them and I must admit I've been tempted to purchase one. Here are the shortcomings from my viewpoint.
1) No Optical Drive...unless you purchase that slice that fits underneath like a docking station. Then you still have to buy a optical drive for it. So it gets pricey really fast.
2) The keyboard is just 95% size.
3) A perfect second laptop, but not as a primary and only latop.
4) The extra screen size that you get on a Z series or T series is very valuable and usefull.
5) While impressively light, unless you travel on airplanes constantly I see no need for a laptop this small.
6) I travel constantly for my work and I use a 15" T60 and could not be happier.
7) My Z series has really impressed me. The quality is every bit as good as a T series.

Ive actually been really impressed with the Z60t models that are on display at office depot... every bit as sturdy as my T40 and the widescreen and size are nice. I personally think the X is a bit too small.
