UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME / reinstalling xp
Hi all,
When I turn on my x40, after satarting to load, xp gives me the BSOD
It says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
This kinda sucks, normally I would just reinstall wihtout thinking twice, but I don't have a floppy drive or a disk drive for this thing.
So, should I buy a usb/IDE adapte, or is there an easier way?
Thanks,

Yeah a drive can be really important so I would recommend getting one. My X40 will boot to an external USB Drive. Maybe you can borrow one from a buddy or Tech. Shop?
I have repaired this type of error before with the instructions listed hereon Microsofts Support Site.
I hope this helps.

ah well, I do have a 2GB OCZ rally usb drive, plenty of space for a 175MB XP ISO, but how do I make it work as a disk type thing?
I read that microsoft article, it offers no solution to my problem. See, I installed Ubuntu, as linux is my love, and now windows is calling me a cheater. (I told windows ubuntu was nothing to me, but she saw right threw it)
Anyways, I'm sure it was just some pre-installed junk, as I, and many other people, have dual booted in the past with no issues.
So if you could tell me how to use my thumb drive as a XP install, that would be coool.
Thanks

(1) Fire up some Ubuntu.
(2) plug un your thumb drive.
(3) find the files on your windows partition you want to save and put them on your thumb drive. Put all you Linux stuff on the thumb drive also
(4) reboot and hit F11 at boot and it will allow you to restore your hard drive.
(Caution) If you use IBM Rescue and Recovery to rstore your hard drive it may blow the Ubuntu install away too.
Then your computer will be just like it was when you took it out of the box.
If you can get ahold of a Windows XP Pro CD you can do a repair install and not lose everything.

pssh, first off
the windows partition is ntfs, linux hates ntfs, and has extremely basic support for it only
second, I keep everything i want to keep on my thumb drive, just in case, it makes my life a lot easier when stuff like this happens.
third, the silly ibm junk does the exact same thing windows does, I already tried that.
fourth, even if I didn't have a thumb drive, I could just do a network backup/put it on my webserver
thanks for trying to help though
so my best option is sitll the usb/ide adapter, right? (i already bought it, just don't feel like waiting until it gets here if I don't have to
thanks for the help so far

OK, If you press F8 during boot and get the boot menu and select safe mode, do you get the option to boot to a recovery console?
If so run "chkdsk /p" (no quotes). If it finds errors then run "chkdsk /r" then reboot. If it still does not boot go back to the recovery console and run "fixboot".
