R50/51e vga to TV display?

#1 Post by madmaveric » Tue Mar 07, 2006 8:10 am

I've searched everywhere and can't find an answer to this one so I hope someone else has tried it/got it working :)

A friend has a R50e or R51e (sorry I can't remember which). This model only has a vga output and she wants to connect it to the tv so she can watch DVD's etc with it. I’ve managed to get a vga to svideo/composite adapter but it looks as though it’s coming through with an incorrect PAL/NTSC (using the composite plug). Is there a way of changing this or are there more problems to this than I’m seeing.

The adapter is a simple vga plug with svideo and composite plugs wired in, nothing fancy there (maybe fancy stuff is needed?)

Any help would be much appreciated.

What country are you in? What brand and model is the adaptor? Where did you order it from?

Sounds to me like this might be a problem with the TV (or a TV setting that needs to be changed) and not with the Thinkpad. I am not sure if this is quite the same thing but this post might help

were in the UK, the laptop is a friends (she got it new from another friend she has who works in the computer business, as he can get stuff trade prices).

The laptop is either a R50e or R51e (can remember exactly which one).

I thought that at first. It looks like it's a frequency problem or a PAL/NTSC problem. There is something there but it is all lines dancing over the place.

The problem seems to be that this laptop doesn't have an svideo or composite out, only a VGA monitor connector. So I brought a VGA -> Svideo/composite adapter (wired direct, no hardware in the adapter). I checked the links you posted but all seemed to be using a laptop with a svideo or composite connector.

I was hoping someone had got this type of connection working or can point me to somewhere that the laptop might have settings for video type etc.

I suppose I could just give her my old monitor to use as a tv until I solve this :D (if it's possible to connect the laptop to the tv in this way)

Wired direct?

Those POSes don't work worth a crap.

IIRC, the cheapest ones that are actually useful cost like USD$50 over here. Dunno what you can find over there, though.
