2378FVU - Current shipping delays?

#1 Post by primedude » Thu Jul 22, 2004 8:35 pm

I placed an order for a 2378FVU earlier today through the SPP. The availability was listed as 2-4 weeks. When I received my confirmation email, it said that the estimated ship date was Sept. 13 (!!!!!). I called IBM to ask about the discrepancy, and they said it would probably go out around Aug. 10.

However, from reading these forums, I've seen some people who ordered 2378FVU units a couple weeks ago received similar information, but then received their computers within a week. Does anyone have any idea how long it might be at this point before I receive my new computer? I assume the IBM reps knew what they were talking about, but were they also being conservative in their estimate? I hope I'm not disappointed, but just to be on the safe side, I already ordered my 7200 rpm disk and extra RAM when I had originally planned on doing it next week or the week after. I'm definitely looking forward to this laptop.

I ordered the same thing (2378-FVU with no customizatoins) through the shareholder program on Sunday. I called Monday to verify and they said that no matter what the site says, it was actually in stock. I think there was a problem with my credit card that slowed it down, but it shipped Wednesday and I should get it as soon as tomorrow morning! If all else fails just call and talk to someone - they are quite helpful.

Cool, congratulations. They also told me that it was in stock but that there were orders in front of mine that needed to be filled. So we'll see. All in all, I have to say that I prefer a company that's extremely conservative in its shipping estimates, as opposed to one (say, Apple) that quotes something that may or may not have any basis in reality.

Checked it this morning, and it says customizing/packing. I think I got it stock (except for an extra battery and a warranty) so hopefully this will go quickly. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I'm having a similar problem - Just ordered a 2373-GVU (no extras) and since yesterday it's been saying "Your product is currently back-ordered, please call for further information." Is this normal or ? any idea when I could expect it? leaving for college in about 3 weeks and need it ASAP :) I ordered the T42p on wednesday btw.

thanks and good luck primedude

Hmm.. I placed an order for my 2378FVU (stock + high cap battery and warranty through SPP, as well) Wednesday night and today recieved notification that it had shipped yesterday. I'm not sure how they normally show up, but my UPS tracking numbers had a link to what appears to be a shipment of 35 items from Hong Kong (two of them are mine).

Anyway, it sounds like you might have just missed a batch. :-/ I have no idea how often they do those shipments though.. Just FYI.

did they email you saying that it had shipped or just updated your order status? I ordered mine probably a few hours before yours and it still says its backordered :( it is a different model, but still, should be about the same right? arghh

I have a question regarding ordering thorugh the SPP.

I personally do not have shares of IBM directly but I did buy into a mutual fund that has IBM in its portfolio. Anyways, long explanation short, anybody here actually try to purchase through SPP w/o actual shares of IBM in his own name. Did it work?

If they actually cancel orders of whatever because of this, then I will have to get my dad to buy it for me and then just pay him back, he is a shareholder.

mtbiac - Both. I received an email as 9:50am CST (didn't check it until just now) and noticed the change on the order status web page at ~10am CST this morning.

tyipeng - No personal experience as I am a shareholder.

My Shipping Conundrum

#13 Post by bigbillyt » Sat Jul 24, 2004 6:10 pm

I ordered my 2378FVU on the 15th and had a generally very pleasant initial ordering experience. I called and recieved a student discount as I have recently returned to college. The Think Express website listed these as taking 2-4 weeks but when I phoned in the order I was told that they had them in stock. So I went ahead and paid for express shipping thinking I would get it by Wednesday or Thursday latest.

Well it "shipped" on Tuesday from Hong Kong and made it as far as Louisville KY on Wednesday. It has been stuck there in customs since Wednesday with no release date in site and there are 500+ other pieces of IBM merchandise with it. I have talked to IBM and UPS and the best I can get is no promised delivery date and I might get my shipping charges refunded. IBM says "there is nothing we can do it is up to U.S. Customs and FDA to release the laptop", UPS says it is IBMs fault as there were problems with their paperwork. UPS website has cryptic messages that seem to suggest that it is an IBM issue:

"RECEIVER REQUESTS UPS TO HOLD THIS SHPT AND CONTACT THEM FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION BEFORE CUSTOMS CLEARANCE;THE ENTRY WAS VOIDED BECAUSE THE EXCEPTION WAS ENTERED IN ERROR"

I have been particularly dissapointed in IBM's attitude about the whole thing. It is especially dissapointing that they have little in the way of resources to help you out with these kinds of isues on the weekend. I was about to try ordering another model to see if I could get it sooner but they can not tell me where the various systems ship from and they cannot help me with "certified used" on the weekend at all.

This is a huge multi-national company that I am going to have a long term relationship with and may need service from in the future?

Mine was supposed to show up Friday, but delivery was rescheduled for Monday - it's sitting in a warehouse 15 mins from me now, what torture! Anyhow, because of the delay I'm going to try to get a refund on the $43 shipping cost.

This makes me sad as I ordered one June 15th and have yet to recieve it. Nothing special, stock. The site said it shipped at the end of June, but a few days later I got a call saying in fact, it hadn't. Here it is the 25th of July and IBM is no where to be found. *sigh*

BAH! IBM said mine shipped on the 23rd (last friday) via UPS 2 day, which really excited me at the time. Now I go to check the tracking via the UPS website and the status says "exception". However, in the detailed info it says that it was cleared but that delivery has been rescheduled although it doesnt give any dates or additional info. Also, its showing 151 packages and they're all going to be delivered to ST. Louis, WTF? I live in south Florida!! Is there any hope of getting the T42p tmrw as they had said (UPS 2 day) or am I SOL??

thanks

There is a big chance you will get it tomorrow. UPS's tracking is always a mess. You can also call UPS. They have more updated info than the site. Cross your fingers.

LOL. I can imagine you sitting on the porch, waiting for the UPS truck, and the disappointment on your face when it passes your house without stopping.

I ordered on 7/13, got it on 7/20. Delivery date *usually* seems to be the date after you see the words "CLEARING AGENCY":

andyk- so is that shipping information you posted the last available information from UPS? I'm wondering if our thinkpads get tagged with a different tracking number after they reach the IBM distribution point and get sent out to us.

mtbiac: Sorry, looks like you may have to wait till tomorrow.

primedude: I received mine last Tuesday (7/20). I posted my UPS tracking just as a sample. My guess is that laptops stay with UPS after leaving factory (no IBM distribution point is involved).

andyk, thanks. The reason I thought there was an IBM distribution point involved is that my tracking number, and the rest of the items in my shipment, are going to North Carolina (I'm in Texas.) I also thought I remembered another post saying that his thinkpad had gone from china to an ibm facility, where it was then overnighted to him. I'm probably remembering that incorrectly. thanks for the clarification.

yeah nothing yet today, so looks like tomorrow (hopefully). I'm still pretty shocked at how fast this went, assuming I receive the T42p tmrw. I was expecting to wait atleast a week or two from reading posts on this forum, but I should have it in just under a week :D
