t43 slow to boot up!!

#1 Post by Randolph_jung@hotmail.com » Thu Mar 09, 2006 2:19 pm

i just recently realised that my t43 is booting up very slow. during start up, it would kinda hang for a while, displaying only the wallpaper. after about 2mins then the taskbar and the rest of the desktop icons would appear. could someone advice me on what i could do to resolve this problem. Thanks

get rid of all the junk in the start-up folder. Also make sure you're running in DMA and not PIO mode in the HD properties.

While a T43 seems too new to have a hard drive failure, slow bootup is one indication of impending hard drive failure. It wouldn't hurt to run diagnostics on the hard drive.

What bfgun said regarding DMA happens sometimes, so be sure and check that - it can make quite a difference.

That and try doing the following as well:

1.) Clean up your system, remove junk; Windows needs HDD space up through the part where you log in from what I have seen

2.) Defragment your HDD

3.) Type msconfig in the Run dialog box and disable startup services you don't use.

4.) If you are using Norton, you might want to think about uninstalling it and going with AVG or something similar with a smaller resource footprint than Norton.

5.) Get Microsoft Bootvis and see what processes delay the Thinkpad for how long during startup; then you can hit "Optimize System..." and it should reboot then arrange certain files on your HDD so that Windows can get to them during startup quicker.

6.) OPTIONAL: Get a Registry Cleaner, preferably one that let's you keep a backup of the current registry state, and clean up all the useless items in the registry...You would be suprised at how much junk is actually in there even after you have uninstalled the related software.

Is it like this all the time or only when you have a network cable plugged in, or a wireless network connection starting?

If it does seem to be network related, try deleting any presistant network drive mappings and see if it starts up more promptly.

Cheers,

Bill

it sounds like the problem I had with Access Connection 4.11a. try uninstalling that and giving it another go.

Sorta on topic...

Im trying to disable dumb services and the IBM apps that autoboot in msconfig. Id like to go through the registry and find junk that I can delete, but I also know that doing this and taking out the wrong line can seriously F up the computer, any recommendations about what I can unclick/get rid of in the registry, currently I only have things in services unclicked... they are:

Adobe Acrobat Crap (three of them)
Java Update Scheduler
msmsgs
ibmmessages
Some AOL junk I already uninstalled after I got Trillian
QuickTime Auto Launch
iTunes Helper

So basically the only two preloaded things I unclicked were:
msmsgs
ibmmessages

What else can I unclick that does basically nothing?? FWIW I have a T43 with the standard IBM install

Important point.

Try a diagnostic startup from system configuration utility, there should be an extreme difference. Also watch task manager > processes when booting to see which process is taking so long to start.
