Memory upgrade!

#1 Post by Kuay » Fri Mar 10, 2006 2:39 am

I have T43 2687D8U with 512MB DDR2 PC4200 and want to upgrade the memory. Can I buy a new 1GB memory and install it?

Where is the best place to buy the memory, is there any advice?

I am interested one from Crucial :

Please help me decide.

Thanks

Unless you want to go beyond 1gig of ram..

I would recommand get another 512 from Lenovo directly.. since the T43 supports dual channel and you need the same type and make to activate dual..

I just order one from lenovo for my T43 on monday for $82, and got it on thursday.. Surprisingly, it was shipped from Hong Kong and only took 4 days to deliver..

For most general purpose computing tasks, the extra 1/2 gigabyte of memory you get from installing a 1GB memory card is a generally much more significant benefit than having dual channel activated through installing a 512MB card!

I agree with the dual channel capability. I bought my T43 with 512MB and got the other 512MB from Newegg. I went with Corsair memory. I wouldn't buy memory from IBM/Lenovo. Newegg or company like them has better pricing. Most memory come with lifetime warranty.

I agree with Bill. I toyed around with a single 1GB stick of memory when I first got this T43. Even with VMware I couldn't tell a difference between 1x1GB single channel and 2x1GB dual channel. Assuming I didn't exhaust the first 1GB of memory. I have the same thing in my desktop at work. I can't notice a diffence between 2.5GB single channel and 2.0GB dual channel.

I'd just go for more RAM rather than be a slave to dual channel. This is as far as general computing tasks as concerned. Just be concerned with getting adequate amounts of RAM, really.

If I had to do it again, I'd consider getting a X41 with 1.5GB, 60GB, XGA for general computing tasks. It would be that much slower. But it would be much lighter. I don't find myself doing as much VMWare testing as I initially imagined.

My $0.02.

Thanks for every comment. I have just order OCZ 1GB from NewEgg. I am looking forward to my new memory and upgrade my T43's memory to 1.5 GB.

Hey Guv'nor-K, I don't know much about the RAM but I have heard that the OCZ is one of the good quality memory. So I choose this brand. Moreover, the price of OCZ is cheaper than that of Kingston. Therefore, I select OCZ.

Anybody have more ideas? Please share yours. :D

fair enough, crucial it shall be. i shouldnt expect any issues using it alongside a 512 mb lenovo stick should i?

edit: one more question, i see two model numbers for the so-dimm pc-4200 1GB stick from Crucial:

1.CT12864AC53E - OEM (on newegg) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145097

2.CT435138 (Crucial website)http://www.crucial.com/store/MPartspecs ... N=CT435138

Whats the difference between these sticks?

i only recently got my laptop so not to savvy on laptop related hardware. more of a overclocking desktop person, which is why OCZ popped into my head :D

What's the difference? One's an OEM stick that apparently only comes with whatever warranty you're willing to purchase from Newegg and one is tested and guaranteed by Crucial for the T43 and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Oh, and about $40.

I agree with Jhem. One is OEM and the other is not.

I use OEM parts all the time. IMHO it's not worth $40 bucks.

would the OCZ's 4-4-4-8 timings make a noticable difference? all Crucial memory is industry spec 4-4-4-12.

the OCZ is pretty cheap:

and i found this Corsair stick which im guessing is expensive simply because its non-OEM?

Likely no real diff.

Some computers get very upset with non-standard timings, and mods. Apple computers are very strict for example. The RAM is either high quality, or not good enough.

I personally would stick with standard stuff. It's just 1 less thing to think about if you have problems.
