IBM support on T41p

#1 Post by raabjerg » Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:33 am

Hello.

I just bought an t41p off ebay, and it arrived today.

Haven't got a chance to actually turn the machine on yet, but called IBM to check that the warranty info I got on the machine is correct, and it turns out it is.

However, he told me this:
1. I would need the original receipt on the machine to have it supported in Denmark (bought it from another EU country)
2. Replacing the keyboard myself might void warranty

Is this true?

Also, he seemed very anxious to get my name, phone number and adress. Is this standard procedure?

Best regards,
raabjerg

I am also having trouble finding the bluetooth device that should be on the machine. It has the bluetooth icon besides the battery and standby LED's, but how can I establish whether or not a bluetooth card is actually present in the machine?

Press the FN button and F5 at he same time. That way you can activate the Blue radio and Wifi.

Congrats on your purchase and no, AFAIK, neither statement is true. EU rules forbid the requirement of having the original receipt on a registered, warranted product.

Call them back and ask to speak to a supervisor. The warranty remains with the laptop, not with the purchaser.

As to the keyboard, it's a Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) and DOES NOT void the warranty by removal, so that statement is nonsense. There are even movies on the IBM website showing how to remove and install the keyoard: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50223 One needs to remove the keyboard and palmrest to upgrade memory or change the WiFi card.

Yes, they normally want all of your personal information when you contact them if you haven't registered the machine online.

James

From IBm/Lenovo site:

Certain countries may require additional documentation, such as proof of purchase or proof of proper importation, prior to performing IWS service.

AFAIK, EU consumer rights regulations trump the IBM/Lenovo IWS restrictions.

I believe the unit was originally sold in an EU country and is now being used in another one? Or was the unit purchased from outside the EU?

If the OP uses the warranty auto lookup at: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=dk and the unit is reported as being in warranty, then there shouldn't be any further requirements or questions. That's the DK warranty lookup page BTW.

Thanks for all the info :)

And yes, the computer was indeed bought from one EU-country to another.

The computer is in warranty when I perform the lookup, so all should be good then (but will confirm this with IBM).

Do you know if it's possible to extend the warranty for a personal use system?

Best regards,
raabjerg

I'm afraid that I've never been able to get a clear and concise answer to this question for EU Thinkpads.

Over here in the US it's a very simple, and relatively inexpensive, matter.

Look for an upgrade link on the warranty lookup URL I posted earlier.

Here's the link from the US site for upgrading in-warranty machines. Try searching for the part number of the upgrade you want to get on the DK website.

James
