Anyone using their X laptop with an external display?

#1 Post by cheeeze » Fri Mar 10, 2006 1:21 pm

Hi.

I'm considering an X40/X41, but i don't want to be stuck with a 12" display at home... it simply doesn't cut it with the work i do.

I'm a little concerned about the quality of the VGA output (either from the ultrabase or directory from the thinkpad). I've heard somebody saying that the quality wasn't good.

What is your experience using an external lcd display?

I am going to want a resolution at 1600x1200 or 1680x1050.

(If the x40 or x41 can't handle external displays very well, is it the same with all laptops?)

Thanks

I use an external LCD all the time, but only at 1024X768. Works fine.

I've used an 17" Samtron at 1280x1024 75Hz with no problems what so ever.

I have an IBM 21" TFT, which displays 1600 x 1200 and 2048 x 1536 with no problems. The latter resolution however is getting a bit too small for my aging eyes.

Thanks for the replies :)

Sounds like it isn't that bad after all.

I'll also try to hook up my current (old t-series) thinkpad to a large lcd screen when i get near one to see how it reacts.

i wont disappoint you, but i used my x41 with my 17'' acer tft while my allday-pc was "under construction". i noticed a great difference between the the signal my geforce 3 produced and the one my thinkpad sent to the screen. the tinkpad-screen looked more blurred than the geforce-screen.

i dont know if it depends on my settings.

Jones: If the quality is unacceptable, i could get the VTBook pcmcia graphic card that has a DVI connector. Not that great a solution, but i can't figure anything else out, if i want to combine ultra portable with a large external lcd.

I just looked at ebay. A margi display-to-go pcmcia graphic card actually goes for around 50$ ... that sounds like a very cheap solution.

the quality is not unacceptable. it only does not fit to my sense of perfection ;) of course i used my thinkpad with beamers and there were no complains but in everyday use and with regard to my geforce i prefer the build-in lcd ;)

I use my X22 on my 19" Dell LCD @ 1280x1024. It's fine after I auto adjust it. Too bad it doesn't have DVI out.

I haven't tried doing 1600x1200 on my 20". I have my doubts about that.. :) I'll be surprised if it works.

I just used X22 with 32" LCD TV as a second monitor to watch a movie (which is located on the desktop hard drive in the other room and accessed via wireless connection :). Everything works fine so far.

I have an X22 running a 21" Sony Trinitron CRT in 1600x1200 mode @32 bit (Dual head mode) and it looks v. cool. Not bad for a non Nvidia card!

Cool. It'll be nice if I ever need to hook it up to my monitor.

What driver are you using? I can only get 16bit at 1600x1200.

I have an X31 and can only get 1600x1200 at 16bit too... I want to know how too...

I have had no problems on my 20" LCD with my X31 with analog VGA connection.
