If you seen my prior post when I got this laptop 3 months ago, I must say I'm very pleased with the features I've selected. I got the Centrino 758.
IBM all the way except I hope they build one with more graphics power for game playing.

I was more concern with a dead pixel when buying a new Thinkpad.
Feb 2008=Thinkpad X61s; 2x faster than X40 but not as asthetic.
Dec 2005=Thinkpad X40; perfect, but bigger than 240x.
Jan 2005=Thinkpad 240x; used; fast but dead pixels doomed it.
2003=Thinkpad 240; used,
1998=new Toshiba Tecra 740CDT. Pricey, heavy & last 5 year.

i have yet to see and ibm that is actually quiet. although, in comparison to other notebooks, ibm x40 does fare better than avg. major noise complaints are the hd and fan noise, the latter could be controlled with a program 'notebook hardware controller' (formerly chc) and now a fan controlling program that is mentioned on the forums if you do a search. as for the HD, the clicking noise is unavoidable and necessary to give the HD a longer life (and really not that annoying after awhile, but just wanted to mention anything making noise).

also, i have not noticed an ibm for quiet some time with dead pixels. i think they finally cleaned that mess up.

finally, some additional things you should look for for in a new notebook are the keyboard (some keys do pop out), pc-card slot working (if you put in a card, does it pop out. some springs in them lost their elasticity), any damage to the minipci slots and area around them, LCD screen frame if it is still holding, and outside aesthetics.

i think i got some things. other members might want to add more.

X40 hard drive noise

#4 Post by louise » Tue Mar 21, 2006 11:44 pm

I have the x40 and that hard drive clicks. I note you say this is necessary to extend the life of the hard drive.

What in the world is it doing while it's clicking and is there any way to shut it up? I'll take shorter life for some peace and quiet :-)

Oddly enough, the fan rarely bothers me (I've only had it a few days so maybe it will), but the clicking hard drive is a different story.

Do all the really light portables have clicking hard drives?

Thanks.

Louise

I have little to no clue what the clicking noise is; some form of periodic cache operations. Although the HDDs available for the X40 haven't really been getting that much competition, right now only Toshiba makes the 1.8" Form factors to go into the X40 and the iPod. Right now, the speed on it isn't too high, so it could very well have an auto-cache circuit in there (which would also be both a solution to the zero-cache error, which may have been implemented by Toshiba, or as a proto-substitute for the cache...which could also give the same error; although I think it has also been stated that the error is caused by information that is not getting back through the HDD). In the years to come, more companies will enter the 1.8" HDD market and perhaps boost the speeds on the drives asa well as the capacity. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
