I've tried sorting through the pages long warranty details on IBM's website, but i cant seem to discern the situations in which my IBM warranty and especially what my accidental damage/Thinkpad protection warranty will cover.

Anyone with some examples of how thinkpadprotection saved your butt or any special situations that thinkpadprotection covered.

conversely, sob stories of what thinkpadprotection DIDNT cover are also welcome, and frankly, more educating.

supposedly, TPP will cover anything the warranty won't cover..

from spills of grand mocha deluxe's to running over your thinkpad with your car..

(all of which have happened)

however, we are now in a lenovo world, so things might have changed..

Well, the question being then. What wont be covered under TPP, is there a "fine print" listing of what Lenovo/IBM wont cover.

If lenovo changes the terms of the contract, are they under obligation to notify the customer of any changes to their warranty?

Anyone noticed any mishaps NOT being covered under Lenovo that were previously known to be covered under IBM?

Yes.

I believe once upon a time they even covered it if you dropped it off the side of a ship into the ocean and couldn't find it.

you must first understand that TPP is an insurance policy..
much like the one knox agency (i THINK that was their name) used to sell..
and insurance regulations change from state to state and outside the USA..
i guess the old rule of "all that is not specifically prohibited is allowed" would apply.. or a variation of that rule..

i have never kept a thinkpad long enough (aside from the few remarkable thinkpads in the collection) or travelled in risky surroundings to need TPP..

When I had purchased the ThinkPad Protection for one of the T30's, one of the stepulations (rather funny if you ask me!) that if the ThinkPad was hit by rain; it WOULD NOT BE COVERED under the protection plan....if you dropped your glass full of wine in it...it would.....everything else, short of a nuke blast(it had something about a nuclear blast...I think that if that happened the last thing on my mind would be to try to get the ThinkPad fixed

!!! ) was covered...

EDIT: It also said that if the damage was done on purpose (non-accidental) the unit would not be covered under the TPP!!!

I have a siamese cat, they are territorial and (usualy) get attached to only one person...her mom died, so I used to feed her with an eye dropper..anyways...she would hate it when I used the laptop, she actually "tinkled" on the keyboard of two machines (dead on the spot..I used to leave them on the desk, open LCD in suspend mode...)..makes me wonder if THAT would be covered....can you imagine getting on the phone with IBM and telling them your cat just [censored] on the keyboard!!?

As I am typing this, she is sitting on the desk to my left....she keeps on bitting my hand so I can pet her...most of the time she will sit to the right of me and bite me, sometimes she will bite me on my legs or sit on the keyboard as I am typing..this one really gets to me!!! But so far she has not tinkled on any other laptops ( I should shut up!!!) HA....now she did a 180 and her tail is all over the keyboard...worse then a kid

..I tell you...!!!

Misery loves company, especially if you own a thinkpad or two.
My friend who attends New York University just recently purchased a used
R52 in SUPREME condition only to drop it to it's DEATH from 3 stories up.
( Two days after acquiring it) He was running up the stairs to class in a
hurry and forgot to fully zip his garbage of a laptop carrying bag.
What a poor, poor bast@rd...

I once owned a vaio ( long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away) and
the [censored] thing just stopped working oneday. I did not drop or spill anything on it and I've kept the battery in supreme condition so I couldn't fathom
what exactly had caused it's demise until two weeks later... I found out
( through a confession ) that my neighbor's 8 yr old son ( whom I had to babysit twice ) put the vaio inside the laptop case with the windows and dvd player on. Naturally, the laptop met its demise through HEAT. The thing FRIED to death. Needless to say, that situation really [censored] me off...

I had this happen on a T23! I was at the peer in Chicago, something came up and I closed the LCD and tossed the laptop in the backpack. I do not remember how much time passed, but I DO remember my back being on "fire"; I removed the backpack from my back and expected the worst! For some reason the TP never went into suspend/sleep; it was just stuck on, I pulled it out of the backpack and it felt like it was about to melt, the backpack was hot and the fan on the TP was BLASTING air....I shut the TP down and let it cool for a bit, until the day I parted with it; I never had a single problem with that machine; I think the experience I had with it would have killed many a laptop.

I have to share this one...FWIW..

when the P4m came out; I saw a lot of lesser brand laptops melt the vents!!! The T30's I had were by no means "cool" running, but they never had melting issues either.....

i find that linux ( or unix ) works GREAT on tp's... not only that but you can tinker with it a whole lot easier to better adjust your hardware (i.e., heat, fan speed, drive, power etc ) to maintain the tp

Back on topic, TPP is a great option IMO. It basically makes Support work FOR you, and fix whatever you need fixed. I swapped keyboards because of it, I doubt they would have if I had regular warranty. I'd imagine you could even get the battery replaced if you complained enough. For me its worth the peace of mind that no matter what I do to my Thinkpad, as long as I don't lose it, it can be fixed. Well worth it on such a large investment.

Now if you get a really cheap great deal, then it might be wise to consider TPP. Those of us who spent $2K on theirs though...
