NEED LCD ideas for 1600x1200 off T42 w/64MB Radeon 9600

#1 Post by Sbrehaut » Thu Jul 22, 2004 10:37 pm

What are fellow forum users using for 2nd LCD monitors externally, through DVI 1600 x 1200 support-18/19" or higher?

My old CRT finally died so an LCD is on my hit list. Any good suggestions for my T42 that provide a great display, mostly for text, graphics and video than for full game performance? Ones that also are easy to rotate and use portrait/landscape, connect to other sources.

A second related problem is: Since I've recently upgraded from a T40 I'm not quite used to SXGA+ in the usual distance (2.5 FT) from my eyes when docked on my desk with wireless kbd/mse that I was used to with regular XGA. So I plan to pull the dock to the side and closer (next to new large LCD obtained above), but I would love to know the right tricks to make the screen easier to see. I've tried some suggested tricks like using ClearType, dot pitch at 96, using the FN magnifier. Nothing seems to do the trick. I'm tempted to try the Liguid view software scaling product too. Any thoughts?

Thanks

For the best image quality, color, sharpness, and text and video display, definitely consider the Samsung 213T. I shopped around for a 1600x1200 display recently, and nothing comes close. I don't play any games, so I didn't take that into consideration. It easily rotates and has DVI and VGA input.

Other suggestions:

Dell 2001FP and other 21" variants (from LG and Viewsonic) that use the same LG-Phillips LCD - good for games, but horrible LCD due to "screen door" effects, not-so-great colors, uneven backlight, and glittery display coating.

Sony 21" LCD - even worse than the above.

23" widescreen displays from Apple, HP, BenQ (all use the same LG LCD) - nice, but color and sharpness are lacking, IMO, compared to the Samsung. The HP has VGA, DVI, S-video, composite, and component input, I believe.

did you look at the IBM 20 inch display..??

also, FWIW, you need the port rep, mini-dock or dock - II to use the digital connection..

trying to remember which configueration will not allow 1200x1600 on the external display without fudging the drivers from ATI..
but its late and the fog is rolling into my brain..

At one point, I had an IBM and and NEC 17" to compare, and one of the things I liked about the IBM was the wide bezel because it blocked out distractions that I could see beyond the edges of my screen. That was probably just where I was sitting at the time, though, since I'm able to use my notebook with a thin bezel with no problems.

I have seen other posters making similar claims about the Dell 2001FP, but I actually own one of these, and I have no such trouble with mine. It is the finest display screen that I have ever owned, and that is with a large budget and a 20 year history of buying equipment.
No "screen door" effects, fantastic color, great backlighting, no "glittery" coating. I'm going to buy three more!

I had the Dell 2001FP for 36 hours and sent it back because I couldn't stand the "screen door" effect, which essentially looks like tiny horizontal black lines running across the screen, especially prominant with gray and bright colors. I think every 2001FP has that issue, but some users notice it and others don't. I have 15/20 vision, and sitting 24 inches away from the display my eyes were always drawn to the lines. Figuratively, I tried hard to get over it, but I couldn't. I got it for $698 total (from Dell Outlet, so it was refurbed but came actually brand new with no dead/stuck pixels but had backlight leaking from the upper right corner), which was a great deal for my wallet but not my eyes. So I spent $300 more to get the Samsung 213T and have no regrets whatsoever.

As for dot pitch - on an LCD, dot pitch is fixed by the native resolution, meaning divide the total surface by the number of pixels and what you get is that the pixel size is fixed for every screen of that size and reslution. In other words, every single 20" LCD with 1600x1200 resolution will have the same dot pitch or pixel size.

The Viewsonic probably uses the same LCD as the Dell, so I'd get the Dell instead if you decide on the Viewsonic because it's cheaper. And I think it looks better too.
