NEWS, bigger harddrives for X40/41 owners

Toshiba has begun shipping 80gb versions of their 1.8" harddrives.
Dunno if the one in the link works in the X40 though, but it's nice that bigger harddrives in the 1.8" form factor are available

Now, all that's missing is a _faster_ 1.8" hdd...

No, unfortunately they will not work, as Toshiba uses a different connector type. It can be seen in the picture in that article: the Toshiba connector is on the short side of the drive, while the X4*-series requires the connector on the longer side.

they've been saying it'll mean smaller drives that are higher capacity for along time, now they have one.

well. it WILL be faster because of the higher data density.

same reason the 120/160gb 5400's come close to 7200 speeds.

I want Hitachi to make a 80 or 100 GB 1.8 with at least 5400rpm and 8mb cache.

That's a winner for me if the quality is as good as their other travelstar.

pssh, screw disk drives, if I could have what I wanted, I would have one of samsungs 32GB solid state drives. They're 1.8" and are being shown off in Samsung's prototype ultra-portables, supposedly get 100x the read write of even the fastest hard drive, meaning it would be limited only to the ATA bus on the x40. That's the worst part about the laptop, the slooow hard drive.

But those arent for sale and if they were, well I could never afford one.h

It will not help us now but within 5 years many solid state hard drives will be coming our way and as they do the prices will drop.
