Long Fan Thermal Gaskets... for free!

#1 Post by makai » Sun Mar 12, 2006 9:09 pm

Hi All,

EDITED again due to PM questions NOTE... If you own a thinkpad that has an SXGA screen, or an ATI 9000 or higher vid chip, then your TP does not need these gaskets. The gaskets are only needed if you have a long fan that you installed yourself where the extension does not touch the GPU. Thanks to draco2527 and others for bringing up these considerations. :)

I replaced my short fan with a long fan I got from ebay. The fan came with a pink piece of plastic over what looks like some "tar" material. I guess this is a heatsink material of some sort. While inspecting the fan, it was obvious that the extension portion that goes over the GPU chip would not make contact with the chip... thereby basically doing nothing to help cool it. I installed it anyways just to see how it would do and as expected, it didn't do too well! The GPU temps didn't even go down at all.

So, the next step was to find something that would help. Well, I did, and now my GPU temps (according to FanControl) are only about 3-5 degrees different from my CPU temp. My CPU temp normally runs in the mid to high 30's... around 37C under word processing scenario. My vid temp runs anywhere from 40-42C. An improvement for my GPU of about 5-7 degrees from what it used to be.

The material I used to accomplish this is used for thermal transfer in the Aerospace industry under very expensive Hybrids. The material is thin, needs to be layered, and will cover the GPU... and I think 2 other chips located in the same vicinity.

To install the gaskets, all you have to do is remove the fan, and slip the gaskets between the GPU and the extension. I think it took about 4-5 pieces, but I'll send 6 just in case. You'll be able to tell how many to use if you reseat the fan and the gaskets don't slide around. DON'T put too many on or you'll cause undo pressure on your GPU/motherboard. BTW, you don't have to remove the existing "tar-like" material, but the pink plastic must be removed (if you haven't done so already). You should also reapply AS5 or whatever you're using on the CPU as breaking that bond without redoing it, is not a good idea.

Anyways... I only have enough material to supply about 4 - 5 people, and I wanted to offer it to anyone who wanted/needed some. So to the next 4 - 5 people who PM me with a mailing address, I'll send the gaskets. Sorry, I can't do this for everyone and I will only ship to the US.

EDITED (again) I decided to list who the lucky recipients are so everyone knows when I run out.
