Novell has previewed its new Linux desktop - SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop

Looks very interesting - check out the Narrated Screencam.

No, there's plenty of us still out here.

Exciting times ahead for Novell with their big push forward into Linux.

At their just finished Brainshare 2006 they previewed the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 platform - both in the aforementioned Desktop (SLED 10) and Server (SLES 10) versions.

SLES 10, due I think in June, will feature Xen 3.0 virtualization. They demonstrated, briefly, Redhat Enterprise Server, Windows 2003 Server and NetWare 6.5 running as VMs on SLES 10.

Of note to thinkpad users, a number of the demonstrators at the the keynote demos used thinkpads running what I assume was SLED 10. They also gave away a thinkpad powered by SUSE linux.

SLED 10 (looks very promising) is due for release in September/October.

Novell have some fantastic products - if only more people knew about them?

Just some random thoughts.

I really like some of the features that are coming out on SLED10. Anybody download and try the demo? Anyone even know what it contains? It's huge for a demo unless it is a full distro.

I didn't think there was a demo of SLED 10 available.

A Beta version 8 DVD was given to participants of BrainShare and the word was that a downloadable version would not be made available on the Novell website.

I would love to try the Novell preview since I actually got to have a crack at it last year at LinuxWorld in Boston. Novell had almost 35-40 UXGA T43p machines with 2.0GHz processors/1GB of RAM in a wireless internet cafe type setting running some flavor of Novell Linux for anyone to use for free wireless internet access.

I was drooling over those machines I tell you. I almost did not go home at the end of the day. I was so excited that I forgot to flip them over and check the model number. Using those T43p's pushed me over the edge and led me to sell my trusty old R31 and lots of other stuff that was lying around the house and spring for a used T40p.

Sadly, I am too cheap to pay for a licence once the Novell Linux eval period expires and I have a very stable SuSE 10.0 config on my machine with a bunch of custom apps that I would loath to muck around with . . . truth be told, Novell Linux is basically SuSE 10 with a bunch of additional non open source apps added on . . . and there is no extra HDD kicking around for me to give it a whirl with.

Maybe the next time I break something critical on my linux install and have to start from scratch, I will give it a try

Not quite - there are a number of differnet SUSE offerings for the desktop.

From Novell there is:
Novell Linux Desktop 9 (Soon to be SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10)
Novell SUSE Linux 10

You can compare them here.

Then there is SUSE Linux OSS 10 from opensuse.org.

There is also a good table here that details support, media, etc for each version.
