Can I test my ThinkPad's hard drive?

#1 Post by JEBB » Thu Mar 16, 2006 10:03 am

Are there ways built in, or as downloadable software, that can test the hard drive in my ThinkPad R40? I'm thinking of s.m.a.r.t. particularly. Thanks.

I ask this because earlier today my drive seemed to be stuck but on reboot it is working fine. It could have been software or hardware.

Yes, you can use PC Doctor (included with your thinkpad), or press Access IBM button on boot, and run the diagnostics, which also includes an option.

In addition, NHC can check your HD's S.M.A.R.T status.

To check for bad sectors or corruption, go to the command line (Start Menu -> Command) and enter:

Code: Select all

chkdsk /r
It will ask if it can scan on boot, say yes (y), and restart.

I started PC Doctor and there may be a problem?

PC Doctor has six tests for hard drives. The first one, SMART status, worked fine. But with the second one, SMART short self-test, it stops at 29% and will go no further. That leaves that test unfinished and the next four not started. I tried it several times on fast and slow testing and get the same result. Any idea what that means?

In the meantime I'll run the system utilities of Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.

Thanks.

The best. Bar none. Get your wallet out and buy it. This has saved my butt more times than any software ever made.
