Offered a X41T but have to give up my T43 should I
Ok So i have a T43 with the 14" 1400x1050 Max resolution. 80 gig HD 1.86 Processor and 1 Gig of ram. My Boss just offered me a X41T but i would have to give up my laptop (both company owned). So i ask you is this a good idea? I am a Computer Tech that does alot of remote access and travels alot. I do have a Desktop PC at work and at home. I tried out the Tablet for about 3 hours and thought is was very easy to use (very usefull on a plane i bet).
I am torn right now. for me the 1400x1050 is great as i have several windows open at any one time. not sure how going back to 1024x768 will be. Anyone else with this dilema?
Any one have any ideas? 90% of my work on my Laptop is remote access and no huge graphic programs.....i actualy find that it does not get as used between trips as much as it use to since i got a Desktop. So now the question to anyone who did switch....regret it?
My boss says no, but then the lighter the better for him. Fo me it would be battery power. Right now i have 2 batterys for my T43 and it is getting heavy. Ok enough rambling.

Hey .02 cents are worth it. i mean i would say 95% of the time i have a battery in the mutibay just to get the extra battery life out of my laptop. I was on a trip to Singapore last week and a co worker had the X41T and his battery outlived mine (extra capacity and mutibay) by a good hour and a half or more. Not having a optical drive is not a problem either as i never use the one i have now.

You might like it if you don't miss the optical drive that much; for connecting up to a network to diagnose problems, it should do just fine.

Based on your usage pattern you described, doesn't sound like you will miss your T42 all that much. You don't use a CDROM, you don't really need the resolution, and you can definitely loose the weight and physical size of the T series. Your migration will be a surprisingly satisfied one I would think.
IBM does offer a no quibbles 30 day return, I'd ask your boss if he can give you time to evaluate the new laptop. Win win situation.
I went from an X31 to a T42p, then back to a X41. The X series truly defines the term mobility, imo.

T43, I think the OP had.
I just read another post on this, it does indeed look like you would benefit from an X41 Tablet.

Well I got a X41t and T43p. I could not give up my T43p for the X41. The X41 is great out in the field for field use but is so S L O W to boot or change programs it is painfull.
I tend to leave it in suspend just to avoid the five minute boot up time. From what I undersand the problem is not from the 5400rpm hard drive but the junk that IBM loads it down with on the hard drive.
Why don't the MFGs understand that when you have a device with limited power for processing, you should not load it full of crap when it boots up? I am looking for another X41 for one of my field people but am having second thoughts because of this.
I do not have the time or skill to do a clean install of the OS and reload all the drivers. If I could find someone to do this for me, I would buy another X41 in a second. Replace my T43p, not.

Reloading the Drivers and Disabling the IBM stuff is no problem for me. I do it now.
For my everyday work i have a great PC with a 20" LCD so that is no problem. For Traveling the Tablet will be perfect and it will arrive Wednesday.
X41T 60 Gig, 8 cell battery 1 gig of ram and a 1.5Ghz processor. Should be perfect for what i need.

this is off topic, but still sort of relevant. I have a 15.4" 6.5lbs monster, which im not using anymore since i got X22 with "only" 800mhz (!) To my surprise I find that i dont really need the power of my larger laptop ... most of the time i use office applications and internet browser. x41t is def. more powerful than my x22
so you should be ok. Enjoy your new toy!!!
We have almost the exact same setup nowRovers3 wrote:Reloading the Drivers and Disabling the IBM stuff is no problem for me. I do it now.

Well, I wouldn't say the performance is UNACCEPTABLE. I was definitely annoyed at first, but after tweaking the application load and OS settings I could get the tablet running quick enough.
But the biggest thing I've found is that to make the decision to switch to the tablet, to be really HAPPY with the transition, you need to be sure that you have a reason to use the tablet. If you don't think you'll ever need / use / want the pen functions, then stick with the T43p. If all you want is mobility, go to the X41, pass on the X41t.

For me there was no other choice. I have just begun to use the tablet functions as so far it is ok. Would i go back to a t43. More than likely. But i will stick it out with the tablet as there are several things in it i have found usefull (Mindmanager is one). After trying a friends Toshiba the other day i would never get and IBM tablet again, it was much slower but mine is company owned and if i leave i have to give it back. Besides it is used mostly for traveling and network trouble shooting.Riddil wrote:Well, I wouldn't say the performance is UNACCEPTABLE.
