can't get bluetooth mouse to work with T43P

#1 Post by newmanm » Sun Mar 19, 2006 5:15 pm

I bought a MicroSoft bluetooth mouse. it works with the USB dongle it came with, but I can't get the internal bluetooth to find the mouse.

I just got the same mouse this weekend for my T42P.

I had to first uninstall all old drivers and then download the Bluetooth drivers from the IBM website and install those.

If your bluetooth taskbar icon is blue and red, then your drivers are not installed correctly, without anything connected your bluetooth taskbar icon should be blue and white. And then when you connect the mouse it should turn blue and green.

If so, manually re-install the IBM Bluetooth drivers; several reasons;

1.) The default Microsoft ones are bare; you have to make your own COM ports as services

2.) Do a clean install and you should have no problem, the registry can confuse Windows during the original install of the IBM Bluetooth drivers to point to Microsoft's

3.) Generally better than the Microsoft Bluetooth drivers as well as much faster.

I can assure that it does work with the internal Bluetooth capability of a T43, as I am using one as I enter this message! I'm using the WIDCOM (IBM) Bluetooth stack, not the Microsoft Bluetooth stack.

BTW, if you are carrying the MS mouse around with your laptop you will probably find it goes through batteries relatively quickly. I found I could get MUCH longer battery life if I shoved piece of thin plastic between the batteries and the battery terminals when I wasn't using it... this has the same effect as removing the batteries.

I recently bought a Logitech V270 Bluetooth mouse and it has an ON/OFF  switch on the bottom of the mouse... much more convenient! It's now my travel mouse and the MS mouse has been relegated to home use.... I'll watch to see how long its batteries last in that role!

Cheers,

Bill

You shouldnt really need to do a clean install.

As far as I know, just uninstall all old drivers in the add/remove programs in control panel and then restart your computer. Then install the new drivers, there should be a setup file in the folder you extracted to.
If there are any problems after that just try to right click on the bluetooth icon in device manager and then point to the folder location of the downloaded drivers. (this is what I did to fix the problems i had)

Also, make sure that you dont insert the dongle at any point.

still having problems. I tried installing the new drivers.

I noticed when the dongle is attached the device driver lists two sets of drivers for each bluetooth device, a bluetooth bus enumerator and a radio on one set for the dongle, and the other set just shows the bus enumerator.

do I somehow not have the internal bluetooth hooked up? the little bluetooth symbol at the bottom of the LCD is not lit up.

the system tray shows two bluetooth icons.
one, red and blue, tells the name of my tp
the other is white and blue, says bluetooth devices

Have you done a Fn+F5, used the Wireless Radio Tab and turned the Bluetooth Wireless on? Then you search for your device using the Bluetooth SetUp Wizard in the system tray.

bluetooth problem solved

#9 Post by newmanm » Fri Mar 31, 2006 12:54 pm

that was it! you're the Man.

all sorts of bluetooth stuff got installed. I suppose now I have to make sure people won't leech stuff off my computer at the airport.

it's amazing how many times the solutions to these problems are something simple.

thanks a lot, Nick.

No problem; glad to help.

You can turn off remote connections you do not trust via the system tray icon. Personally I do not know enough about Bluetooth yet to trust it with more than mouse connectivity.

try the kensington wireless set up like I did:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 506#145506

$24.99 at best buy. no drivers or software, just plug and play. also doesn't use up notebook battery life.
