A20m upgrade to Celeron 900, or PIII at 700 mhz?

#1 Post by volvy » Mon Mar 20, 2006 2:20 pm

I've got an A20m 2628-31U. That's a 500 mhz Celeron right now. IBM only specs the system board in the 31U (08k3315) for 500 or 550 mhz Celeron. Anyone know if the 31U will work with a Celeron 900 mhz or with a PIII 850, 900, 1000 running at the speedstep speed of 700 mhz?

Thanks

I have upgraded two A20M from 500 celeron. Made a big difference. See if you can get an 850 P3 mobile on ebay. That is best you can do. It will only boot at 700 because the multiplier is not accessible. Get pdf that shows how to disassemble. I only had 2 or 3 screws left over after reassembleing. Get some good heat sink compound. I also put in a dvd and upgraded the firmware to handle the latest DVD+DL recordables.

These speedstep cpu's will not run at their rate speed because the motherboard does not support the multiplier settings. eg: a 650 will run at 550, an 850 at 700. Anything higher will not work. Also, if it is not an 1024x768 screen it is probably not worth upgradeing. I have both 800x600 and the larger.

Upgrade with minimum cost

He is right. If you put in faster CPU without replacing mobo, it definitely not gonna work:

Processor Boot SpeedStep
Piii/700 550 700
Piii/800 700 800
Piii/850 700 850
Piii/900 700 900
Piii/1000 700 1000

Without a mobo that supports SpeedStep, you'll only get the boot speed. That means the maximum is 700MHz. However, 700MHz is pretty good if you only put light duty on it. If I were you, I'll buy a Piii/800 for budget consideration. For more up to the speed, I'll replace mobo together and get a Piii/900 or 1G.
