CD-RW Problem - Either Drive or RecordNow is broken

#1 Post by K. Eng » Sat Jul 24, 2004 5:51 pm

I have a Matshita UJDA745 CD-RW/DVD combo drive (16x8x16 or something like that).

Today I was trying to burn some Linux cds when I heard the drive struggling (made high pitched noises and mechanical clacks every few seconds). Finally the RecordNow software said the burning failed. I rebooted my system and tried again, with the same result. DVD playback is fine.

Fortunately, I was able to burn the remainder of the cds on another drive, but I am worried about my ThinkPad's drive. I know the Linux ISOs are good because I checksum'd them (MD5) and they burned fine on my other machine.

Has anyone experienced this? Thanks in advance :)

A silly question perhaps, but were you trying to burn at a speed not matched to your CDs ? I know I had a problem once when I foolishly tried to burn at 40x onto media designed to support only 32x...

A good question, but the answer is no. I was using 40x media in my 16x drive. The 40x media works perfectly in my desktop's 40x drive.

I've had the same problem using CDRW's. It said try a CDRW from a different company. I haven't tried that yet...
