Problem reading data stored on DVD

#1 Post by Nick Y » Tue Mar 21, 2006 4:11 am

My T43 has an internal DVD/CDRW. To write to DVD's I use an external Iomega Super DVD Writer via USB. I can read the data DVDs on the Iomega, but seldom on the internal reader. I can play professionally produced DVD videos. The internal DVD is a Matshita UJDA765 (driver 5.1.2535.0) and I use DVD-R's, writing to them with Sonic RecordNow (version 7 -as came installed on the T43.) Sonic is set to Mode 1 and I have recorded as both ISO+Joilet and ISO+Joilet +UDF to same effect. (I have not had any problems with CD's, but then they have been recorded on the internal device.)

Any suggestions wrt reading the DVDs, please?

TIA, Nick

FPE:

There are several types of CD-RW/DVD drives, some of the first ThinkPad ones would do some DVD's but not all; then came the "DVD-Multi-Readers". If you ever had your drive replaced under warranty they could have sent a used part, this could have been a non-multi-reader configuration. I would imagine anything above the T42 will not have the "lower" grade burners....but I could be wrong; the other possibility is that you are not properly closing the DVD's or you drive is bad.

FWIW:

I had this problem with one of the T30's and the T41 (the other T30 had the "multi-reader), I called EZServ and explained the situation, they sent me two of the "multi-readers" one for the T30 and one for the T41!!!!

Thanks for response.
a) The drive has not been replaced as the laptop is only 4 months old; DVD writer about 8 months old. BTW we have the same problem with my daughters T42, which is a year and a half old, although I cannot test that at present as she has it abroad with her. Neither laptops or writer have been back for repair etc.

b) Could be that I am not closing the DVD properly when writing, although I did check this recently prior to recording more DVDs. RecordNow does a post-write verify, which I do every time.

Basically I can mount some DVDs but not others, which were written during the same recording session on the laptops. I can mount all on the external writer. Presumably, as the disks will not mount, there is a problem reading the disc directory, especially as the head seems to hunt backwards and forwards for something before saying that no disc is present in the drive.

Try this tool to see what formats you can run.

Thanks, but as said above, I know what formats I can access; DVD-R's can be rad by the UJDA765.
This afternoon, I backed up a load of system files to two DVD-R's via the external writer; both DVDs are just about full. One will mount on the laptop and the other will not; both mount on the external writer....

I think that it may have been the DVD's although I am still testing. I did some tests on my existing DVDs and found a few errors on them. I then bought some Taiyo Yuden -R blanks and so far so good. There are some media reviews at http://www.cdr-zone.com/reviews/dvd_media_reviews/ which I looked at to assist choice.
