ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery

#1 Post by maverick2000uk » Tue Mar 21, 2006 4:21 am

I have a T41p with 40Gb Hard Drive.
I wanted to install all the new driver updates via Software Installer but before I did that, I followed the recommendaiton that I use ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery to back up my system so I did.
IT CREATED A BACKUP OF 11 GIGS! It has now only left me with 7Gb on my Hard Drive.
  • Is it safe (and better) to remove Rescue and Recovery and also the backup?
Should I keep it and just buy more disk space? If I do this, can I (ironically) use the backup to restore my system if it is ESSENTIAL that I add ALL extra disk space to the same partition on C: ?

I had used a program called "Uninstaller 2006" to un-install my Antivirus, Firewall and CIsco VPn Client.... the program deleted some registry entries and then my system is TOTALLY messed up. If not for "Rescue & Recovary" I would have had to re-install windows... man, it saved me centuries of labor :)... god bless Rescue & Recovery... I mean it... if you value your data, then it is something you should keep.

NOw, I have an external USB HDD and I backup on to that external drive. I would suggest that you get a external HDD that you can use as a backup... will save you your internal HDD space. As of now, you can go ahead and delete the backup made on your computer (DO IT THROUGH RESCUE & RECOVERY) and then do a backup again when you get your external HDD.

The price of your external HDD pays for itself when you need to perform a disastor recovary... :)

Simple case of deleting the back up and uninstalling the software. Point noted about Rescus & Recovery though.

It might be worth considering to use Two (2) separate USB external HDD enclosures for:

a) Back up only your data

b) Rescue & Recovery of your system (minus your data).

Reason for (b) is that once you have your computer programs all installed & settings all customized, you generally don't want to mess around with these anyways...

Note: R&R formats your external USB HDD, so make sure no important data is in your HDD for R&R image of your HDD...

Is it really true that the current version of R&R will reformat an external hard disk?

I have an external Western Digital disk with plenty of free space, but I don't want to lose all the current files that are already on there when I use R&R for the first time to back up my T41p.

Thanks to anyone who can provide confirmation on this important aspect of R&R backup.
600e (needs a replacement HD)
T20 (2647-44U, needs a win98 install disk to rebuild vmm32.vxd)
T23 (2647-HNU, pulsing fan, won't boot)
T41p (2373-GEU, works perfectly)
T61 (7658-CTO, works perfectly)

Read ashley's post in the following thread. With version 3 of Rescue and Recovery, you can backup to an external hard drive without losing the existing data or partitions.

I recently performed a backup through R&R on an external hard drive that already had data on it--it did not reformat my hard drive.

I can verify this also. Had done the same thing with initial 3.X verison of R&R, no loss of other data on thre USB HD

Say I got a virus on my C partition. I restore from a external drive, what does it do to the C partition, quick format? What are the chances the virus will survive?

Right, but how?
Does it do the quick format first and then restores the backup?
